NSW SES Wauchope Unit

NSW SES Wauchope Unit The NSW SES Wauchope Unit is the local combat agency for Floods, Storms & Tsunamis. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to
assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located
throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily
identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, sto

rm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support
to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban
Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue
that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been
trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained
rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other
emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force,
the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe,
StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally
through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk
communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts
caused by these events are minimised. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

The Hastings Cluster recently convened for an Award Ceremony, honoring exceptional service. Our unit was presented with the 'Commissioners Unit Citation' for its contributions during the May 2025 Floods. Moreover, one member received the 'National Emergency Medal for the 2019-2020 Bushfires', and two members were honored with the 'Commissioners Commendation for Courage' for their courageous efforts during the floods. These recognitions underscore the unit's tireless work. While volunteers do not serve for accolades, recognition is a welcomed gesture.
Well done all!

‼️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FORECAST for tomorrow 17 October ‼️

⚡️⛈️ Severe thunderstorms are possible tomorrow across central eastern and northeastern areas, becoming likely across parts of the Central West, northern Illawarra, Sydney, Hunter and Mid North Coast.

💨🍃 Damaging wind gusts (> 90 km/h) and large hailstones (> 2 cm) are the main risks in these storms. If isolated supercells form, they may bring destructive gusts (> 125 km/h) and giant hailstones (> 5 cm)

⏰ Initiation is likely during the afternoon commencing with isolated cells inland. As the southerly change reaches the central coastal areas, severe thunderstorm risk increases significantly with isolated supercell formation being possible in metro areas. Thunderstorms may continue into the late evening following the change up the coast, or even overnight.

💭 Let’s all make smart, safe decisions — not just for ourselves, but for the well-being of those around us. Stay safe and stay informed.

ℹ️ The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

🚗 Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
🪢 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
↔️ Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
📲 Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
📲 For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the NSW SES on 132 500
📲 If life-threatening call 000 (Triple Zero).
