Update on Holly's Adventures in Canberra.
Tomorrow is the big event of the week, with volunteers from all emergency services meeting at the National Emergency Services Memorial for the 2026 National Memorial Service.

AFAC, the Australian and New Zealand National Council for Fire and Emergency Services, will hold a memorial service honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who have died in the line of duty.

Volunteers will present in their respective Dress Uniforms and be on Parade.

An AFAC memorial medallion will be presented to the families of those who have died in the line of duty, and the names added to the memorial wall will be recognised, acknowledging those who have died in the line of duty since records began.

The Memorial Service runs from 8.45am to 10.00am and is available to watch via a YouTube livestream.

A quick pitstop on the way to the airport. Holly is jetting off to Canberra to participate in the 2026 Young Emerging Leaders program.
This program takes 2 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 from each State Emergency Service in the country and enables them to meet senior national leaders, tour national institutions and build lasting professional networks with other dedicated volunteers who hope to be leaders within their respective State Emergency Service in the future.
Wishing Holly and her Lilydale State Emergency Service counterpart, Tim all the best on their adventures in our nation's capital.
We thank National SES Volunteers Association and the VICSES Volunteer Leadership Group for this opportunity to support our young people develop their skills and networks now and into the future.

For the Fallen
By Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Come on down to the Wedderburn Community Services fair at the Coach House Gallery. Volunteering and community groups would love to speak with you and share what we do.

Over the weekend, the Wedderburn Unit was proud to send two volunteers to Echuca to participate in the annual Women in Rescue event. This event was the first overnight event in Women in Rescue's 9 year history and gave participants time to learn and reflect then consolidate their skills.
Our volunteers had a fantastic time, learning and honing skills with an opportunity to network and work alongside other volunteers in the region.

We are so proud to share that our very own Holly Winslett is one of two Victorian volunteers who will be travelling to Canberra to work and learn alongside other Young Emerging Leaders from State Emergency Services across Australia.

Volunteering with VIC SES gives you incredible experiences both within your local community and across the state (and sometimes, in this case, even across other states!!).

Congratulations Holly!!! We can't wait to hear about your adventures with the other YEL program representatives.
