๐ŸŒบ Our Dance Troupe Begins Preparations for Thursday Island ๐ŸŒบ

Our Western Cape College Boarding Dance Troupe is honoured to have been invited to perform at the Torres Strait Kaziw Meta NAIDOC celebrations on Thursday Island next term.

As preparations begin, our Cultural Coordinators have been meeting with the Kaziw Meta team via video conference to collaborate on planning for this exciting event. It is fantastic to see two boarding schools, connected through a shared commitment to culture, working together to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

Both boarding schools are currently working through the logistics, performance planning, travel arrangements and cultural program to ensure students have a meaningful and successful experience.

We are honoured to have received this invitation and canโ€™t wait to share our Dance Troupe with the Kaziw Meta community and the wider community as part of their NAIDOC celebrations.

๐Ÿš— Boarders to Beyond: Another Milestone Reached! ๐ŸŒŸ

A huge congratulations to Tyra-Lee on successfully obtaining her Learner Driver Licence today!

This achievement is part of our Boarders to Beyond Program, which supports our boarders to prepare for life after school by building the skills, qualifications and experiences they need to succeed.

Obtaining a driverโ€™s licence is an important step towards independence, employment opportunities and greater confidence as our young people transition into adulthood.

At Western Cape College Boarding, we are committed to ensuring our students leave with more than just an education we want them to leave with the practical skills and opportunities needed to thrive beyond boarding.

Well done, Tyra-Lee! We are incredibly proud of you and canโ€™t wait to see where this journey takes you next. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒฟ Proudly Sharing Culture at the Careers Expo ๐ŸŒฟ

Today, our Boarding Dance Troupe was honoured to perform at the Western Cape College Careers Expo, proudly sharing culture with students, staff and community members.

A special mention to our three visiting students from Lockhart State School who were staying with us to attend the Expo and jumped straight in to join the performance. It was fantastic to see them embracing the opportunity and sharing culture alongside our boarders.

Our dance troupe loves any opportunity to celebrate and share the rich cultures of Cape York and the Torres Strait through dance, storytelling and connection.

If you are interested in having our Dance Troupe perform at a community, school or corporate event, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out and get in touch with our team.

โš“๐ŸŒŠ From Boarding to Beyond: Exploring Future Pathways ๐ŸŒŠโš“

Yesterday, a group of our boarders had the incredible opportunity to visit the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation depot in Weipa as part of our Boarders to Beyond program.

Experiences like these are all about helping our young people explore the many pathways available after school and connecting their education to real-world careers. Students learnt about the wide range of opportunities available through the maritime industry and North Queensland Bulk Ports, including roles in operations, maintenance, logistics, administration and on the water.

A highlight of the day was touring the depot, stepping aboard one of NQBPโ€™s vessels and hearing firsthand from industry professionals about their career journeys and experiences working in our region.

A huge thank you to Duncan Hockey and Julie Keane from North Queensland Bulk Ports for taking the time to invest in our students and provide such a valuable experience. Partnerships like these play an important role in broadening horizons, building aspirations and helping our boarders see the possibilities that exist beyond graduation.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and are already asking when they can come back! ๐Ÿšขโš“๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ Culture at the Heart of Boarding ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค

As we come to the end of National Reconciliation Week and prepare for tonight's Mabo Day celebrations, it is the perfect time to officially welcome Glen to the Western Cape College Boarding Campus team as our new Culture and Connection Manager.

Glen brings a wealth of cultural knowledge, community connections and a strong passion for supporting our young people to grow in their identity, culture and leadership. His role will focus on strengthening cultural programs, supporting community engagement, leading our cultural team and ensuring culture continues to be at the heart of the boarding experience.

Over the past week, our boarders and staff have taken time to reflect on the meaning of Reconciliation Week, recognising the importance of truth-telling, respect and walking together towards a shared future.

Tonight, our boarding community will come together to celebrate Mabo Day, honouring the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the landmark decision that changed Australia's history by recognising Native Title and the enduring connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to Country.

The evening will feature traditional dancing, cultural performances, Kup Murri, traditional foods and opportunities for students, staff, families and community members to come together in celebration, reflection and pride.

We are excited about what lies ahead under Glen's leadership and look forward to continuing to build a culturally strong, safe and connected boarding community where our young people can thrive, remain connected to who they are and be proud of where they come from.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’œ Empowering Our Young Women ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒฟ

Last weekend our Year 7-9 girls had the opportunity to attend Horse Therapy Camp at Wolverton Station Swift FNQ with a strong focus throughout the weekend on understanding healthy boundaries, building confidence and developing positive communication skills. ๐ŸŒŸ

Throughout the camp, students participated in activities and conversations that encouraged them to use their voice, communicate their needs clearly and confidently and understand that saying โ€œnoโ€ does not need to lead to conflict. A big focus was helping our young women recognise the importance of personal boundaries, self-respect and respectful relationships.

The weekend created a safe and supportive environment for students to connect, reflect, build trust and continue developing important life skills that will support them both at boarding and beyond. ๐Ÿ’™

We are incredibly proud of the way the girls engaged throughout the camp and the maturity they showed during discussions and activities. Experiences like this play such an important role in supporting the wellbeing, growth and empowerment of our young people. โœจ

๐Ÿด๐ŸŒฟBuilding Confidence at Wolverton Station๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿด

What an incredible experience for our Year 7-9 boarders! A couple of weeks ago our students had the opportunity to attend a Horse Therapy Camp at Wolverton Station and it provided so much more than just time around horses and animals. ๐Ÿ’™

Horse therapy creates powerful opportunities for young people to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, develop emotional regulation, increase self-awareness and resilience, and build trust and positive relationships. It also gives students the chance to slow down, step away from everyday routines, connect with others and reflect in a calm and supportive environment.

Experiences like this are so important for supporting wellbeing and helping our young people continue to grow both personally and socially.

A massive shout out to the Emma Swift FNQ for all of the work that went into making this happen. With the challenges and disruptions surrounding Cyclone Narelle there was a huge amount of planning and preparation happening behind the scenes to ensure this opportunity could still go ahead for our boarders.

Thank you Emma for your commitment and dedication to creating meaningful experiences for our boarders! ๐ŸŒŸ

Today, a group of our Year 11 boarders visited the 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment at Evans Landing as part of our Boarder to Beyond program, which aims to expose students to pathways and opportunities after graduation.

Students learnt about the important role Bravo Company plays in protecting Australiaโ€™s borders across the Western Cape, toured the barracks, and then headed to the beach with soldiers to practise surveillance techniques.

A massive thank you to 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment for providing such a valuable experience for our students. Our boarders thoroughly enjoyed the day and are already keen to return and do more with the ADF.
