📢 An update from the Pangarinda Crew

Just days after a much-needed light autumn 🌦 rain, a quiet transformation began at Pangarinda Botanic Garden. From what had appeared to be bare, dry earth, the first shoots of 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙪𝙢 🌸emerged, bringing a welcome splash of colour to the landscape.

Closely related to the lily family, these striking plants display rich wine-red blooms, sometimes softening into shades of pink. Their sudden appearance after rain is a reminder of the resilience and beauty of Australia’s native flora. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙪𝙢 is not only found locally but also occurs across regions such as the Yorke Peninsula, parts of Victoria, and the Flinders Ranges. Its ability to thrive in varied environments highlights its adaptability to Australia’s often harsh and unpredictable climate.

Alongside it, another species adds contrast to the garden’s seasonal display. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙪𝙢, with its smaller but equally eye-catching 🌼 yellow flowers, brings a bright, sunny tone to the autumn palette. Unlike many flowering plants, the flower heads of 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙪𝙢 gradually die back and form bulb-like structures. These drop to the ground and self-sow, allowing the plant to naturally regenerate and spread throughout the garden.

Native to more inland areas of South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria, 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙪𝙢 is well suited to drier conditions and continues to flourish with minimal intervention.

Together, these two species create a subtle yet stunning display at Pangarinda Botanic Garden each autumn. Their emergence following rain 🌧 serves as a gentle reminder of the cycles of nature and the importance of preserving native plant species in our local landscapes.

📢 An update from the Pangarinda Crew

Visitors to Pangarinda Botanic Garden are often surprised at the wide variety of small eucalypts growing there.

Two of them are 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢, found growing on the yellow sand plains of the Great Victoria Desert. It is enjoying our hot, dry summer.

𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘬𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘢, commonly called Bookleaf Mallee due to its leaf formation, produces yellow-green flowers in autumn that appear amongst the grey, mauve-tinged leaves. Growing 2 to 3 m tall, it is proving to be a popular small garden tree

📢 An update from the Pangarinda Crew

☀️ Summer is a time when a number of Eucalypts flower, this year as dry as it is they have been flowering and attracting insects 🐜 and 🐦 birds. A few Rainbow Beeeaters have been spotted, not only by volunteers but also visitors from 📍 Austria.

During their visit they 📷 photographed a Blackshouldered Kite which they were very excited to show volunteers. They told us they had visited Australia five times, they love our 🌳 Eucalypts and were very impressed to see so many different species 🌱 growing.

Flowering for the first time is 𝙀𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖 commonly called ribbon-barked mallee, as in autumn the bark is shed in ribbons 🎀 beginning from the base to the upper limbs staying attached and moving with the wind until it breaks free. It will become more obvious as the tree matures. There are a few Eucalypts that shed bark this way, seen commonly in the 📍 Western Australian goldfield area.
