Wendouree Fire Brigade - CFA

Wendouree Fire Brigade - CFA Wendouree Fire Brigade is a fully volunteer CFA fire and emergency service. This pages is manned by volunteers who are sometimes busy fighting fires.

DO NOT USE IT AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION. Wendouree Fire Brigade is a fully volunteer fire and emergency service responsible for the supporting the communities of Wendouree, Lake Gardens, Mitchell Park and Alfredton. Wendouree is one of the nearly 1200 brigades that make up the Country Fire Authority (CFA). Wendouree Fire Brigade’s assignment area consists of over 10,000 residential proper

ties, more than 300 businesses and industries (including Mars, McCains & Laminex), several primary and secondary schools, as well as Ballarat Airport. As per the 2011 census there are over 30,000 people living in the Wendouree Fire Brigade assignment area. Located in District 15, one of three Districts in the CFA West Region, the brigade is a member of the Eureka Group. The Eureka Group consists of Wendouree, Ballarat, Ballarat City, Buninyong, Mt Helen & Sebastopol Fire Brigades. Eureka Group is one of the eight groups located in District 15. Wendouree Fire Brigade was first founded in 1913 as a Country Fire Brigades’ Board volunteer brigade. The Fire Station was located in Howitt Street until 1932 when the brigade, along with a number of other brigades in the state, where disbanded by the Country Fire Brigades’ Board as a consequence of the worsening economic depression. In the late 1950’s the suburb of Wendouree grew significantly, as did industry in the area. The second founding of Wendouree Fire Brigade occurred in December 1960 following submissions by the Shire of Ballarat to the Country Fire Authority board. The Fire Station was located in Gillies Street North (opposite the Convent) from 1960 to 1992, when the current station was built in Learmonth Road (opposite Timken’s, soon to be Aldi!). Wendouree Fire Brigade welcomes new members, especially those available for day time turnouts (such as part time/afternoon employees or stay at home parents with school aged children). The brigade also welcomes non-operational members who would like to support the brigade through fundraising, administration, etc. For information on joining CFA, register you interest via the CFA website: http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/volunteer-careers/volunteers/ or contact the brigade Secretary directly. Its always a proud moment as the Ballarat Good Friday Appeal Area Manager to present the Ballarat Fire Brigades Good Friday Appeal Trophy to my brigade- Wendouree Fire Brigade - CFA who collected over $21,117 this year. I am not ashamed to say I stir the other brigades up and am happy to present the trophy to any brigade that collects more than us- as the ones who win in this are always the kids, that is why we do it.
Every year we are gob smacked at the generosity of the people in and around Ballarat. The businesses who host containers during the year, our residents & those travelling through on Good Friday, who make sure they have money give at intersections & those who donate by phone and online. Ballarat total this year was $217,609 a fantastic result! Without your donations there is no brigades Trophy.
Tonight I presented it to 1st Lieutenant Kenny Mitchell, who deserves a hug for the many hours he has put into collecting over the years.

As winter starts to roll in here is a very valuable reminder copied from Victoria Police on road safety in wet weather.

🚔 HEADLIGHTS ON, NOT JUST DRIVING LIGHTS 🚔

Victoria Police is reminding all motorists to ensure their headlights are switched on during wet weather and periods of reduced visibility.

We continue to attend collisions where visibility has been a contributing factor. Many of these incidents may have been prevented by simply turning on your headlights.

Drivers are reminded that daytime running lights and driving lights are not a substitute for headlights. While they may help you see, they often do not illuminate your vehicle from the rear, making dark-coloured vehicles particularly difficult for other road users to see in rain, spray and low-light conditions. Road rules require headlights and tail lights to be used in hazardous weather conditions that reduce visibility.

We are also reminding motorists that high beam headlights are generally not required in wet weather and can dazzle oncoming drivers, creating additional hazards. Use low beam headlights unless conditions specifically require otherwise.

Another simple reminder: drive to the conditions.

Wet roads mean reduced traction, longer stopping distances and less room for error. Slow down, increase your following distance and avoid unnecessary acceleration, burnouts or attempts to break traction. Wet weather is not the time to show off.

If you're seeking attention on the roads, the only attention you may receive is red and blue lights behind you, followed by amber lights when your vehicle is loaded onto a tow truck.

Be visible. Be sensible. Drive to the conditions.

Anyone can drive in perfect weather. Safe drivers adjust when conditions change.

Last week, a couple of our Wendouree members visited the children and educators at Kidscape Wendouree.
It's fair to say the educators had just as much fun as the children exploring the fire truck! Everyone enjoyed getting a closer look at the equipment, learning about fire safety, and even having a turn squirting water from the fire hose.
Thank you to the team at Kidscape Wendouree for having us. We always enjoy opportunities to connect with our community and help share important fire safety messages in a fun and engaging way.

Who do you think had more fun—the children or the educators?" 🚒💦

At training this week we looked at hazardous materials and how to safely deal with them. We had a few different scenarios involving a fuel tanker where members had to demonstrate techniques to make the scene safe.

We also looked at our gas and splash suits and some possible scenarios we would use them. As it turns out, we would need that training the same week.

Ironically, on Sunday night, we were responded to an alarm that turned out to be a hazmat incident. Crews worked with FRV67 and FRV68 HAZMAT operators to make the scene safe and were on scene for over 5 hours.
Photos included are of our training session not the hazmat incident.

This was Nadine Nunn donating on Good Friday. It's her 26th year doing it. Always giving every year at the CFA donation points for The Good Friday Appeal. 23 years at Invermay and 3 yrs at Wendouree.

Nadine’s message on Good Friday was, “Well done to all you fireys.!”

From all of us at Wendouree Fire Brigade, Thank you Barry for bringing Nadine down to see us. It is one of our most favourite parts of the day seeing her. And a very big thank you to Nadine for your many years of donating.

Last night at training our members had a play with Cleveland lay and flaked hose and how to effectively and quickly deploy them.

Afterwards, we completed a basic domestic rescue scenario where a person was unconscious up against a toilet door. Lots of good discussion was had around possible ways to extricate the patient in a safe and timely manner.

All in all, a simple, but very beneficial and fun night of training!
