Today ..... mulching, edging trimming and pruning all areas of the rosegarden as per winter pruning schedule. I think we are 3/4 of the way through. Also as volunteers we get so much satisfaction of seeing big parts of the rose garden ,cleaned, pruned, fertilised and mulched. It's wonderful. Thanks also to our Saturday crew of rosies and extra day volunteers.

A hive of activity in the Victoria State Rose Garden as we prune different sections of the rosegarden. Teams are working on the Standards roses in the avenues of the Tudor Rose Garden, the rosebeds petal E, A, B finished C, D to go ...the Tripods are being pruned, Weeper's , Festoons and Arches. As well as the Bud Section with David Austins & the Leaf sections with the Australian bred roses and of course our Heritage borders. At the same time we have volunteers w**ding ,fertilising, mulching and edging and maintenance. Committee meetings, newsletters, organising us all, liasoning with Parks Vic etc. Become a volunteer with us, we will teach you how we prune or what to w**d or do. 🌹

Happy Retirement Jim! 💐
In late June we said goodbye to a special person from the Parks Vic ranger team...Jim, who is retiring. He has been helping us in the rose garden for over 20 -30 plus years and started working at The MMBW depot 52 years ago as a teenager, then as a valuable team member for Parks Victoria. ( see photos of Jimmy on the horse at Werribee Park in earlier days) Happy Retirement Jimmy 🎣 and thankyou & all the best from us all. We will certainly miss your in the rose garden & your friendly banter. 🌹🌹🌹

It is with sadness that the Victoria State Rose Garden Society Supporters, Committee & Volunteers wish to express their sympathy at the passing of David Austin Jnr 1958-1926. We also have a designated David Austin rose section called The Bud at the Victoria State Rose Garden in Werribee South which was well supported by David Austin & his team.

David J. C. Austin
Chairman, David Austin Roses
1958-2026

It is with great sadness that we announce that David J. C. Austin has died at his Shropshire home, surrounded by his family. He had been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare and incurable neurological condition.

David joined the family business in Albrighton, Shropshire, in 1990, as his father, the late David C. H. Austin, was gaining wider recognition for his work in breeding English Roses. He went on to lead the business for more than three decades, driving its growth and transformation from a specialist nursery into a globally recognised name among rose lovers. Throughout his leadership, the creation of beautiful, fragrant roses was always central to the business he built.

David’s children, Richard, James and Olivia, said:

“First and foremost, Dad was a gardener. That was at the heart of who he was. He carried our grandfather’s vision with humility and an unwavering sense of responsibility, always putting the roses, the family business and its people before himself. He was kind and modest, with a playful spirit, a sense of adventure and a real enjoyment of life. He faced his illness with the same courage and dignity that he brought to life. Above all, he was our Dad, and words cannot express how much we will miss him. We couldn’t be more proud of him.”

The Austin family would like to thank everyone who cared for David and supported them during his illness.

David Austin Roses continues under its experienced leadership team, working closely with the next generation of the Austin family, and we are as committed as ever to serving our partners and rose lovers around the world.

We are getting a lot of chewed rose canes from rabbits !!!!... especially on the base of old roses so we are trying Neutrogs Meat Works Blood & Bone 👃 to deter them. Ann has just sprinkled a little around the rose but not too close to the cane and roots. Hopefully it's a deterrent 🙏

In May after our lovely Biggest Morning Tea at 10 30am, we had a visitor come say hello. This brushtail possum wasn't shy at all and calmly walked to the tree after we shooed him away from the cakes! ....and beware he has sharp claws to climb the tree so easily.
