Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Behind every emergency service uniform is an ordinary person.
A mum. A dad. A partner. A son. A daughter. A friend. A colleague.
Someone who has bills to pay, children to get to school, jobs to go to, dinner to make, dogs to walk and the same everyday worries as anyone else reading this.
But there is another layer.
They are also an emergency services member.
And sometimes, that means being called from the dinner table, getting out of bed in the middle of the night, or putting everyday life on hold to respond when someone else is experiencing the worst moment of theirs.
Our members can attend incidents that stay with them.
Road crashes. Searches. Serious injuries. Families experiencing unimaginable loss. Scenes and circumstances that are difficult to process, even when you have trained for them.
We don't share those details, because behind every incident is a person, a family and a community.
But it is important to remember that our members are people too.
When we arrive at an incident, something changes.
We put on a shield of armour — built from training, experience, professionalism and responsibility.
In those moments, the community needs to see people who are calm, capable and seemingly unbreakable. People they can trust when everything around them feels chaotic.
That armour allows us to do our job. To reassure, to lead, to keep going.
But the armour isn't who we are. It's something we put on because the situation demands it.
And eventually, the incident ends. The uniform comes off, the radios go quiet, and the trucks return to the unit.
There is no single way to process what they see and experience.
For some, it might be a shower when they get home. Changing out of their uniform. Sitting quietly with a cup of tea. Talking to a partner, family member or friend. Watching something familiar before bed. Going for a walk. Taking some time alone.
Some members have their own post-incident routines that help them transition from response mode back into everyday life.
And these personal routines happen alongside the formal support provided following an incident, including crew debriefs and access to VICSES wellbeing and peer support services.

So the next time you see an incident on the news, take a moment to think beyond what is immediately visible.
Think about the family facing the aftermath of losing someone they love.
And spare a thought for the emergency service men and women who stood there, who tried everything they could, who worked alongside their crews and other emergency services hoping for a positive outcome.
Because sometimes, even when the uniform comes off, the weight of the job doesn't immediately come off with it.
