Thoughts and prayers to our colleagues from Marine Rescue NSW

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

Vale – Brian Klingberg
It is with heavy heart that we announce the sad passing of one of our own, Edithburgh Flotilla leader Brian Klingberg. He has been a vocal advocate for marine safety through his association with the squadron and Volunteer Marine Rescue South Australia.

Brian Klingberg was the inaugural member of the Squadron’s Edithburgh Flotilla, with 27 years of service. He is clocked up over 400 search and rescues during his time with the squadron. Brian joined the squadron with a commercial fishing background of over 27 years. In the late 1990’s, he led a few concerned community members from Edithburgh to establish the Edithburgh flotilla and provide a Marine Rescue service for the region and beyond.

His knowledge of the local waters was next to none and was often called upon by the authorities seeking his advice. Besides his leadership to the Edithburgh flotilla, he was an exceptionally good skipper and also manned an after-hours marine radio base from his residence – such was his dedication to safety of life at sea.

Above all he was a true gentleman and a mentor, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who met him.

Brian will be missed but his legacy lives on. Our heartfelt condolences to Jan and Roger, who are both active members of the squadron.

May his soul rest in peace

Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) courses 2026

Online booking is essential to secure a place on the course.

The Short-Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) course conducted by qualified instructors from the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron will provide a thorough understanding of maritime radio communication at sea. This is an internationally recognised qualification following the syllabus developed by the Australian Maritime College on behalf of the Australian Communication and Media Authority. Successful completion will result in the issue of a certificate of proficiency. This certificate is a prerequisite to gain a Coxswain or Master V certificate.

The course provides training on the use of VHF radio communication equipment for recreational and commercial boating. The participants will learn the use of onboard VHF marine radios, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), Search and Rescue Transponder (SART), Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) enabled radios, for effective use in maritime communications.

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, one will be able to:
• Ability to use VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling (DSC) operating procedures, particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety.
• Understanding of simple maintenance and troubleshooting practices required to keep their marine radio equipment in good working order.
• Understanding of regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities.
• Basic knowledge of the Australian marine search and rescue system
• Understanding of the regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities.

The practical component will provide hands-on training on:
• Various controls and settings on a VHF marine radio
• Making a routine “log-on” call and “logging off upon return”
• Making and receiving a distress call
• Demonstration of digital selective calling (DSC) & various call formats, and
• Demonstration of Automatic Identification System (AIS)

Cost $250 (includes Marine VHF radio operator’s handbook, course materials and examination fees)
