Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) courses 2026

The Short-Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) course conducted by qualified instructors from the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron will provide a thorough understanding of maritime radio communication at sea. This is an internationally recognised qualification following the syllabus developed by the Australian Maritime College on behalf of the Australian Communication and Media Authority. Successful completion will result in the issue of a certificate of proficiency. This certificate is a prerequisite to gain a Coxswain or Master V certificate.
The course provides training on the use of VHF radio communication equipment for recreational and commercial boating. The participants will learn the use of onboard VHF marine radios, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), Search and Rescue Transponder (SART), Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) enabled radios, for effective use in maritime communications.
Course outcomes:
At the end of this course, one will be able to:
• Ability to use VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling (DSC) operating procedures, particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety.
• Understanding of simple maintenance and troubleshooting practices required to keep their marine radio equipment in good working order.
• Understanding of regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities.
• Basic knowledge of the Australian marine search and rescue system
• Understanding of the regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities.
The practical component will provide hands-on training on:
• Various controls and settings on a VHF marine radio
• Making a routine “log-on” call and “logging off upon return”
• Making and receiving a distress call
• Demonstration of digital selective calling (DSC) & various call formats, and
• Demonstration of Automatic Identification System (AIS)
Cost $250 (includes Marine VHF radio operator’s handbook, course materials and examination fees)
