⚡️ Households in south east Queensland should see lower electricity prices from 1 July 2026 following the Australian Energy Regulator's final determination of the Default Market Offer (DMO) released last week.

On average, residential customers on standing offers will see their bills reduce by between $155 (-7.2%) and $229 (-10.7%) in 2026-27 depending on whether they are on a flat-rate or time-of-use tariff.

As the new DMO comes into effect from 1 July, it is a good time for SEQ households to review their electricity plan and explore whether they can get a better deal from their current retailer or another provider.

QCOSS has developed a range of information resources to support households and community services to help understand electricity bills and tariffs, and to find out how to get a better energy deal. These resources can be found at: https://communitydoor.org.au/resources/energy-and-water

Today we honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander man who challenged the claim that his family’s traditional land was owned by the Crown.

The High Court’s decision in Mabo v Queensland (No 2) overturned the claim of 'terra nullius' and set a precedent in Australian law for the recognition of Indigenous custodianship over their traditional land.

The Mabo decision, handed down on 3 June 1992, was a historic and hard-won victory for truth, paving the way for future generations to be recognised as the Traditional Owners of their land.

Today, we reflect on Eddie Koiki Mabo’s courage and resilience, and reaffirm our commitment to truth, justice, and reconciliation.

“We now have almost 60,000 Queenslanders on the social housing register. That almost double the number of people as compared to just five years ago.”

QCOSS CEO, Aimee McVeigh, was on ABC Far North Queensland last week to talk about Queensland’s housing crisis, rising cost-of-living pressures, and the effect it is having on children’s wellbeing.

The time for change is now. QCOSS is calling on government to invest in children and families, and work closely with the community services sector to make sure that families have what they need by creating a whole-of-government Families Strategy.

"We can be like alchemists, turning lead into gold, when it comes to our funding. We need to be funded for what we're delivering - outcomes for service users."

This is a quote from a participant at our Cairns Town Hall.

They described how their organisation has been coping with higher and higher demand for community services despite stagnated funding.

We have been hearing this across all our 2026 Town Halls.

Some of the main issues faced by the sector today are:
📈 Increased demand and complexity of service needs
💲 Cost of living pressures across housing, transport, and utilities
💻️ Training and retention of staff

But as always, our sector is doing everything they can to make sure everyone's supported and included.

Our Town Halls are an important chance for QCOSS to hear directly from members and frontline workers to gather your insights, knowledge, and expertise.

What we learn from Town Halls directly shapes our advocacy and support, and drives systemic change in all regions of Queensland.

Thank you to QLeave for sponsoring this year's Town Halls.

QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh spoke at the Queensland Homelessness Conference last week, alongside the launch of the new campaign, PIVOT Movement Queensland.

The PIVOT Movement highlights the need for fundamental reform to how we approach homelessness. The system we have is reactive, and often gives too little, too late, while people are already in crisis.

What we need is a preventative, coordinated approach.

Homelessness doesn’t occur in isolation. It sits at the intersection of housing, health, income, and community support.

Aimee’s speech touched on how crucial it is to address economic injustice - because deteriorating material conditions further erode social cohesion and community, in a time when we need to work together to address crucial issues like climate change and racial justice.

Solving homelessness isn’t easy, but it requires us to address root causes, not just reacting to the existing crisis.

"There's been a seventy percent increase in rents in Gympie in just five years and it's impacting people across the community not being able to access affordable and secure housing."

Population pressures from the rest of South East Queensland is making housing harder to get for everyone in Gympie.

Our Executive Director of Policy and Research, Bronwen Kippen, was on ABC Sunshine Coast Drive last Thursday after our Town Hall, talking about the issues we heard coming straight from frontline workers.

Make sure you tell your story in our Community Sector Survey, closing Monday.

"We know by the time kids hit school in Queensland, about a quarter of them are falling behind."

Raising kids in Queensland is harder than it should be.

Increasingly, families are having to choose between food, rent, and fuel. This is resulting in a quarter of Queensland kids not hitting their developmental milestones by the time they go to school.

Our Raising Queensland campaign tackles these issues by calling on the Queensland government to invest in children and families. For the first time, Queensland has a Families Minister in Cabinet, and community services across Queensland are united behind this agenda.

Only 3 days left until our annual Community Sector Survey closes.

Last year, you told us one in every two frontline workers were feeling severely burnt out and stressed. We want to know, have things gotten better or worse this year for you?

Help us advocate for the sector by telling us what is most important to you and what changes would make the biggest impact on your work.

The survey only takes 15 minutes to complete!

👉️ Head to www.qcoss.org.au/survey to get started.
