It was a big day for the Team from West Nowra Rural Fire Brigade!

During the Bunnings BBQ, our Brigade was paged for a smoke sighting in Longreach.

On arrival we found an area with multiple piles alight, and running through the grass/mulch around them due to the wind.

These piles had been burnt days prior and had re-ignited due to the high winds. This is a reminder that if you undertake any burning activities on your property, you must ensure that the fire and any remnants are fully extinguished!

Our team worked with Cambewarra Rural Fire Brigade, Huskisson Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade , and Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Brigade to extinguish the fires.

Using fire on your property? Do you know the requirements and responsibilities that come with lighting up?

Today crews from West Nowra Rural Fire Brigade and NSW Rural Fire Service St Georges Basin Brigade attended to a series of fires, which had been lit by the landowner, including outside of their property.

This is a timely reminder, that whilst permits are not generally required outside of the Bushfire Danger Period (however you should always check your specific circumstances and location), safe burning is ALWAYS your responsibility. It is up to you to make sure that the burning is conducted such that it is safe, you are well prepared and the fire must not escape your property.

You are also required to provide notification to the RFS or Fire and Rescue NSW depending on your location at least 24 hours prior to lighting. For more information, please use the resources found on the RFS website, and

The Weekly “Westy” #203 29/06/2026
G’day Friends, Fans & Followers. Welcome to the last edition of the Weekly “Westy” (under the penmanship of Greg ‘Hog’ Judson, aka Eddy Tore, anyway!!).
This week has seen us responding to 2 incidents
🔥Monday 2:56pm. We were dispatched to a truck fire at Parma. On arrival crews found the cabin are of a tipper truck on fire. Being a large vehicle, the Bulk Water unit from NSW RFS - Shoalhaven Operational Support was also dispatched to the scene.
🔥Thursday 4:55pm. We were responded to what was initially reported as a bushfire at Worrigee. On arrival, along with a tanker from Culburra Beach Rural Fire Brigade, crews found what appeared to be another deliberately lit fire in the old golf course complex.
‼️If you see anyone deliberately lighting fires, remember arson is a crime and the details should be forwarded to NSW Police Force. Early interception of an arsonist might just save a life…

In other news..
🚒Tuesday evening was again a maintenance night. Our crews went over the vehicles and equipment to ensure everything is where it should be and ready for use. In an emergency situation knowing where everything is and that it will work is imperative.
🌭Sunday, we had the opportunity to crew the fundraising BBQ at Bunnings Nowra. After an extremely slow start (everyone slept in on a cold and rainy day 😴) we got rocking as the day progressed. As always, we had Nowra’s best sausages from the sausage king South Nowra Meats on lovely fresh bread from East Nowra Bakery. Please support these local businesses, that support us.

As I close out on "my" last edition of the Weekly “Westy” and wrap up 5 years as Captain of West Nowra Rural Fire Brigade, I’d like to acknowledge and thank all of the members past and present of the brigade for their support over that tenure. I would also like to pass my most sincere thanks to everyone who has been part of the Weekly “Westy” fan club, those likes and your comments have kept it ticking on. Knowing your community is behind you is a real morale boost for the crews.
As for me, “Ed”, I’m not hanging up my helmet just yet. I’ve actually been promoted and move into the role of Deputy Group Officer for the Shoalhaven Group 2 area. I hope this frees me up some more time to spend with family and friends, but I’ll still be in the thick of it when it matters.
Cheers Ed
😁
P.S. West Is Best!
