It's that time of year again! 🎅🚒
The Winchelsea Fire Brigade Santa is getting ready for another festive season, and this year we're doing things a little differently.

To help us plan ahead and ensure we can commit to as many community functions, school break-ups, sporting clubs, and end-of-year celebrations as possible, we ask that all Santa visit requests be submitted via email.

With the number of requests growing each year, we kindly ask that bookings be received by 31 October 2026. This will give our volunteers the best opportunity to accommodate everyone and make the season as magical as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We look forward to bringing a little Christmas cheer to the Winchelsea community again this year!

AFAC News has released the Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Spring. The outlook suggests an earlier start to the bushfire season this year. Drought-affected areas in parts of eastern and western Victoria are facing an increased bushfire risk leading into spring and summer.

Under the forecast conditions, there is potential for multiple large fires starting as early as October across parts of the state.

Now is a great time to start preparing your plan and property, including:
📋 Updating your fire plan
🌱 Mowing long grass
🏡 Clearing gutters.

Burn Responsibly This Winter
🚨 Did you notice the smoke from the large burn near Anglesea today? 🚨
I've had a number of people ask what it was.
What this should remind us is that despite the rain we've received, our bushland is still dry enough to burn through winter. The fact that these burns are taking place shows just how quickly fire can take hold when conditions allow.
🔥 If you're cleaning up around your property and conducting a burn-off:
✅ Never leave it unattended
✅ Have an adequate water supply and firefighting equipment on hand
✅ Monitor conditions closely
✅ Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area
It doesn't take long for a burn-off to get out of control if it's not being properly supervised.
Let's all do our part to keep our community safe and prevent unnecessary fires. A few extra minutes of supervision could prevent a major incident. 🚒

It’s not always about jumping on the truck and attending fires. 🚒

Sometimes it’s about turning up afterwards and making sure our trucks are restowed, cleaned and ready to go for the next callout.

Today, some of our members came down to the station, pulled the trucks out, gave them a good wash and cleaned the many dirty hoses left from last night’s job. 🔥

It’s the work behind the scenes that keeps a brigade ready to respond when our community needs us.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up a few hours of their day to get the job done. Your time, effort and commitment are truly appreciated. 🙌❤️

Last night, Winchelsea Fire Brigade responded to a hay bale fire where, on arrival, approximately 50 large square bales were already well alight.

With around 100 more bales still unburnt and a very large pile of chaff sitting up against them, our priority was to stop the fire from spreading and create a break between the burning and unburnt hay.

With the wind carrying embers and smoke directly towards the unburnt bales, this was no easy feat. Thankfully, with the assistance of the property caretaker and his handy machinery, we were able to create a much-needed gap and allow the burning hay to safely burn out.

A huge thank you to the many brigades who came to assist. This incident required plenty of manpower and water, and having that support made a huge difference.

A special thank you to Digga, who provided the bulk water tanker and helped keep the water flowing when we needed it.

And of course, a massive thank you to Sandyz of Winchelsea who, after one quick phone call, somehow managed to make enough pizzas to feed around 40 hungry firefighters! 🍕❤️ There is nothing quite like knowing there will be food waiting for you after hours on the fireground!

It was a great team effort, both on and off the fireground, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part. 🚒🔥❤️

A message to our community.
One thing I've noticed is that many people in town don't have a fire plan. They often believe it's something only people living in heavily forested areas or on rural properties need to think about.
But recent fires around the world have shown us that entire towns can be affected.
If a fire threatened our community, would you know what to do? Would your family? Would your neighbours?
You could be at work, your partner could be elsewhere, and your children could be at school. Having a plan in place before an emergency happens is one of the most important things you can do.
Please take the time to sit down with your family and talk through your options. A well-thought-out plan could save lives.
