With it officially being the first day of spring it is important that residents do the right thing.
When cutting lawns and garden plants it is essential that green waste is disposed of in either green waste bins if available of red general waste. Often staff find lawn clippings and branches dumped on public land.
While it may be natural material, throwing garden waste into bushland can be hugely detrimental. Unlike rubbish that generally stays where it was dumped, garden waste can contain seeds or root fragments and spread into nearby bushland.

An innocent backyard act is having serious consequences.

Over the next two weeks WSWA Biosecurity W**ds Inspectors are inspecting properties in Kenthurst targeting creek line areas after the recent detection of an aquatic w**d called Senegal tea.
Usually found along the edges of water bodies and can root into the mud it quickly outcompetes and smothers native vegetation.
It has hollow stems which allows it to float. Seeds are spread through water and is therefore essential that a catchment wide program for detection is activated to identify the source of the infestation at the top of the catchment.

Last friday WSWA staff assisted local residents of Kurrajong and Hawkesbury Bushcare volunteers to undertake an early morning w**ding activity and upskilling.
The finished results saw improved road safety, and we were able to reclaim native vegetation from overgrown w**ds.
What an awesome turnout of 14 volunteers and 5 staff participating. The main w**ds targeted included Balloon vine, Privet, Cape Ivy and Cats Claw Creeper. The green waste generated was removed from site and disposed.
This activity was made possible by hosting the Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network and Landcare coordinator at WSWA and supporting of local volunteers and community organisations.

WSWA staff were fortunate to observe an emu last week inside Wianamatta Regional Park. It's that time of year again the WSWA team have been out controlling Boneseed in know locations before they flower.
This woody shrub will set to flower in another month. It is essential to get this w**d before the flowers die and a black berries form. They are consumed by birds and are the main source of spread. Look for seedlings under trees, under power line and along Fence boundaries and roadsides. Look for the white hairs on the leaves.

It spreads rapidly, and is becoming more common in residential areas.

Recent works undertaken by the w**d control team has seen a reduction of a w**d called Sagittaria within Blacktown Creek. Lots of sediment build up has created shallow water suitable for the w**d to grow. Staff have to wait for the leaves to grow above the water before herbicide is sprayed onto the leaves. In this situation a kayak is used for access around the infestation.
