Western Sydney Weeds Authority

Western Sydney Weeds Authority We are the Local W**d Control Authority for Blacktown, Hawkesbury, The Hills and Penrith councils

We work to contain and control the highest risk invasive w**ds across western Sydney. We seek to protect our natural, agricultural and recreational assets from the impact of w**ds. Our staff undertake the activities of property inspection, landscape surveillance, aquatic w**d harvesting, herbicide application and bush regeneration techniques.

Recent works undertaken by the w**d control team has seen a reduction of a w**d called Sagittaria within Blacktown Creek. Lots of sediment build up has created shallow water suitable for the w**d to grow. Staff have to wait for the leaves to grow above the water before herbicide is sprayed onto the leaves. In this situation a kayak is used for access around the infestation.

As we move into cooler conditions residents need to be on the lookout for a w**d called Mother of Millions.
The name is based on the plant’s ability to reproduce vegetatively in large numbers. Each plant produces small plantlets along the edges of its leaves which detach and form new plants.
These plantlets can easily be spread by machinery and mowing or brush cutting and are found along roadsides, fencelines and paddocks.
It is essential that livestock are kept away from plants as they are toxic when consumed.

Last week we collaborated with Hawkesbury City Council in a video to showcase our recent stakeholder collaborations which involved w**ding and litter removal activities in Bligh Park. We have recently conducted 2 working bees at George Street Reserve in Bligh Park with council, contractors and local volunteers.

Thanks Marty for giving us the opportunity to share the camera with you!

Important reminder this easter Bunny Ears Cactus may sound cute but can be a big problem within our bushland areas.
It's important that you are aware of what you are purchasing.
It is not allowed to be sold in NSW.
Stick to chocolate rabbit ears instead.

The w**d control team have been out at Sackville ferry crossing undertaking w**d control to improve visibility and safety along the road. Lantana, Balloon vine and Wild to***co were treated.
We even found the council sign smothered in vines.
Further works will be undertaken within the council reserve next week weather permitting.

On March 5th Western Sydney W**ds Authority supported by Hawkesbury Nepean Landcare Network conducted a working bee at George Street Reserve in Bligh Park. The event involved conducting w**d control activities and a litter pick up to improve the amenity and to improve the condition of canopy trees within the reserve. A number of stakeholders were involved including Western Sydney W**ds Authority, Hawkesbury Nepean Landcare Network, Hawkesbury City Council, Ecotune Bush regeneration, community members and local councillors. In total we had 11 attendees participate in w**d control activities including the removal of woody w**ds like Cassia, Moth vine and Crofton w**d. This opened up the area to assess the litter onsite coming from the nearby carpark and bin overflow. A few bags of litter were removed from site and disposed of.
Thank you to all our stakeholders who attended.
