Susan Templeman has been an active member of the Macquarie community for more than 30 years as an advocate for neighbourhoods, local business and responsible government. Starting her career as a radio journalist, Susan worked as a reporter in the Canberra Press Gallery before moving on to New York and London. In 1990, she settled in the Blue Mountains where she ran her own business for 25 years. A tenacious fighter for the community, Susan has stood beside residents of the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury through fires and floods, losing her own home when a devastating bushfire tore through Springwood, Winmalee and Yellow Rock in October 2013. Married to Ron with two children, it was her daughter’s diagnosis with a mental illness at a young age that led her to politics. It sparked her drive to make the mental health system easier for families to navigate, and her passion to improve early access to mental health services for young people. Those commitments have been reinforced by the effects of the natural disasters that have hit Australia, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Elected to Federal Parliament in 2016, Susan has delivered real change for the local community through holding the government to account and refusing to give up – even when the fight seems lost. From delivering a $10 million upgrade to Springwood Civic Centre in the Blue Mountains to construction of a new state-of-the-art stadium at Windsor Wolves Rugby League Club, Susan brought the fight for better community facilities to the doorstep of Federal Parliament even before her election. The Black Summer bushfires of 2019/20 and the devastating floods in the Hawkesbury in 2021 saw Susan on the ground every day with her community; in fire headquarters for morning updates seven days a week, delivering food to firefighters, and organising helicopters loaded with groceries for delivery to communities surrounded by floodwater and desperate for supplies. She has raised alarms about the fragility of the mobile phone network and NBN in the face of these disasters. Susan is passionate about her local environment and the effect over development and climate change has on the Macquarie region. She was also the first to commit to improvements to Richmond Bridge, securing more than $2 million way back in 2010 for a study into what could be done about continuing congestion. Now, she wants to see a fair and transparent process for delivery of what has become a project worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Susan will continue to support important Labor policies such as a fair and equitable National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), closing the gender pay gap, real action on climate change, and a future that’s Made in Australia. She supports restoring trust in government through establishment of an independent National Anti-Corruption Commission, and a future where household energy prices and emissions can be reduced through responsible policies like cheaper electric vehicles and rethinking energy supply. Susan has spent decades not as a politician, but as a member of her community advocating for important change and necessary services, and she is proud to represent this divergent electorate.
