St Florian’s Day is an important day for firefighters across the world. On this day, Firefighters across many agencies are honoured for their service and bravery in protecting their communities.

This year members of Mt Keira Brigade were honoured with a Commissioners Unit Citation for Service at the NSWRFS Training Academy on St Florian’s Day. The Citation was awarded for their exceptional efforts during the localised flood event in April 2024.

The Commissioners Unit Citation for Service recognises those members that responded to the incidents on that day putting their lives on the line to help their community in a time of need.

We as a Brigade are proud of our members for upholding our values and for exhibiting bravery during these events.

As the year comes to a close, Mt Keira Brigade wants to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Throughout the year, the Brigade has attended 167 incidents, had several of our members attend out of area deployments around the state and interstate as well as raising bush fire awareness around our local community.

We want to thank the community for their support during 2025 and the commitment shown by all of our brigade members!!

25/11/2025

Please note, the Fire Danger rating for tomorrow November 26th in the Illawarra and several surrounding areas is EXTREME, with a total fire ban in place.

Please monitor the day and if you haven't already, download the 'Hazards near Me' app for up to date notifications on incidents near you.

🚨 EXTREME FIRE DANGER & TOTAL FIRE BAN – TOMORROW 🚨

Tomorrow’s Fire Danger Rating is EXTREME, and a Total Fire Ban will be in place across the Illawarra/Shoalhaven and Greater Sydney (Sutherland) areas.

WHAT TO DO TODAY

- Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan – know when you will leave and where you will go
- Clear leaves from balconies, gutters, doorways, and small garden beds
- Secure loose items ahead of strong winds
- Check your phone is charged and your emergency apps are updated
- Make sure everyone in your home, especially kids and vulnerable family members, knows the plan
- If you live near bushland, reserves, escarpment edge, or coastal scrub, be extra prepared to leave early

TOTAL FIRE BAN – WHAT IT MEANS

🔥 No fires outdoors
🔥 No wood or charcoal BBQs (gas/electric only)
🔧 No outdoor hot works (welding, grinding, cutting metal)
🚜 Avoid using equipment that may spark (mowers, slashers)
🚭 Dispose of ci******es responsibly - one spark is enough
⚠️ Penalties apply for breaches

Stay alert and stay safe. Your preparation may save lives.
