An injured bushwalker with a broken leg was rescued in the Perisher Valley last weekend in our first alpine rescue job of winter! ❄️🥾

Working alongside NSW Ambulance and NSW Police Force, our crews deployed to the Guthega area and assisted with accessing the patient before moving them to a safe place for further treatment of non life-threatening injuries by paramedics. They were then transported to hospital via rescue helicopter.

Fortunately, the patient was in an area with mobile reception, allowing them to quickly contact emergency services and receive assistance.

🚨 If you're travelling into remote areas where reception may be limited or unavailable, and to avoid relying solely on your phone battery, it is advised you carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) to call for help if needed.

📝 Ensure you always log your trip using a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service trip intention form and monitor conditions ahead of your adventure using the Hazards Near Me app.

When 5 year old Rayaan’s mum showed us the custom-made SES uniform he wore for Wear Orange Wednesday, we knew he deserved a special visit to his local SES unit to meet his heroes 🙌

Rayaan and his mum spent hours creating his very own SES uniform, complete with a handmade thank you poster. His thoughtful tribute caught the attention of the entire school, earning him a special moment in front of the assembly to celebrate Wear Orange Wednesday.

With being celebrated today, it was a wonderful opportunity for our volunteers to see the impact they have beyond emergency response. Through their dedication and service, they inspire young people like Rayaan to get involved, give back and make a difference in their communities.

A huge thank you to NSW SES Canterbury Unit for making the visit so special and giving this future SES volunteer a memory he’ll never forget! 🧡

Congratulations to Kevin Jones who has been awarded the Emergency Services Medal in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours 🎖️👑

After more than 5 decades of service, Kevin is truly deserving of this prestigious recognition.

At just 14 years old, Kevin joined the NSW SES and has since played a role in thousands of rescue operations. Today, as Unit Commander of the NSW SES Hawkesbury Unit, he leads volunteers in delivering rapid, effective responses in one of Australia’s highest flood-risk areas.

From record-breaking floods, rescuing casualties trapped in cars and winching large animals to safety, Kevin has seen it all - but a flood rescue in 1978 sticks out most! 👇

“We were transporting a pregnant woman in a flood boat when it became entangled in powerlines and capsized,” he said.

“This event was whisker close to having a tragic outcome. Thankfully, we managed to get everyone out of the water and rescued safely…

The lady later gave birth to a healthy baby girl and, in a touching gesture, named her Peta Kevin after us," he said.

Kevin said he was deeply honoured to be recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours. We are incredibly proud of Kevin and grateful for his unwavering dedication, leadership and service to the community 🧡

NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing said “Not only has he strengthened emergency response in the Hawkesbury community, but he has inspired generations of emergency service professionals.” 👏

Are you prepared to play safely in the Alpine region this snow season?

Operation Snow Safe is underway, and reminds skiers, snowboarders and visitors to the Snowy Mountain region to prioritise safety on and off the slopes.

Last snow season was the busiest on record for NSW SES specialist NSW SES Alpine Search and Rescue Unit volunteers, who were kept busy with an average of two rescue tasks each week from June to October, responding in darkness, blizzards and poor weather conditions.

This week, NSW SES members joined NSW Police Force, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Winter Olympic Medallist Josie Baff to launch operation Snow Safe 2026.

Our members continue to stand ready to support Snowy Monaro Police District with calls for assistance this snow season, however we urge people heading to the slopes to be prepared:

❄️ Check the weather forecast so you’re not caught off guard by dangerous weather conditions. Conditions in the mountains can change quickly.

📲 Download the Hazards Near Me App for real-time warnings and updates in your area.

🗻 Carry chains for your tyres and use them where required during slippery road conditions.

⛷️ If you plan on venturing into remote areas, hire a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) so rescuers find you quickly in an emergency.

It’s the perfect opportunity to get ahead on your storm prep - trim overhanging branches, clean your gutters and prepare your home emergency kit.

⚠️ Roads will be busier with double demerits in play, so ensure you drive to the conditions.

🚗 Planning a trip? Check Live Traffic NSW for traffic and road updates or your local council’s website to avoid delays or disruptions.

📲 Stay safe and prepared by downloading the Hazards Near Me app or checking the NSW SES website for the latest warnings.

Enjoy, rug up and stay safe!

1,200 rescue operators trained in Large Animal Rescue Operations through the NSW SES! 🙌🐴

This milestone marks the incredible growth of our Large Animal Rescue Operations (LARO) capability, which began in 2011 with just 24 members attending the first Large Animal Rescue Workshop. The first formal LARO course was delivered in 2014.

15 years on, LARO training is now delivered across all NSW SES zones and to our partner agencies, significantly strengthening our ability to respond to incidents involving large animals.

Whether a large animal falls in a septic tank, is trapped in a well, stranded in a river, or caught in another difficult situation, our trained operators have the skills and confidence to carry out rescues safely and effectively, helping protect both the animals and people involved.

A special thank you to David King for his tireless dedication and leadership in driving this project from its beginnings to where it is today 🐄🧡
