🚨 OK LISTEN UP 🚨 No matter if you’re a Millennial, Gen Z, or even Gen Alpha (yes, we see you) — we can all agree on one thing: Wonthaggi’s Active Youth Space (WAYS) needs a bit of a glow up fr

We’re talking: Skatepark, pump track, a refreshed playground, chill spaces to sit, talk, scroll, laugh, and generally exist. We want ideas that make WAYS a place you actually want to be.

🤸‍♀️ Parkour?
🎨 Street art walls?
🎤 Performance space?
🌳 More shade?
🔌 Charging points?
🤔 Something we haven’t even thought of yet?

📝 Drop your thoughts in the Engage survey: engage.basscoast.vic.gov.au/ways

And hey — if you’re an older gen (respectfully) and reading this… We still want your feedback. But PLEASE share this with the younger people in your life so their voices are loud and clear!

🍾♻ Do you think the Container Deposit Scheme should be expanded?

The state government has directed all local councils to roll out a separate glass recycling bin by mid-2027. Every other Australian state (excluding Tasmania) is expanding its Container Deposit Scheme to include wine and spirit bottles, but Victoria is going in a different direction.

Victoria already has a Container Deposit Scheme that lets you return glass bottles and cans for a 10c refund at over 600 locations statewide. It's working well and being embraced by communities across the state. Already processing around 10 million containers a week!

Expanding the scheme to include wine and spirit bottles could deliver the same recycling benefits as an additional bin at a fraction of the cost. Instead of building on what's already working, the state government is forcing councils to roll out a brand-new purple bin for glass, a separate truck, a separate collection, a separate processing stream, all to be funded by ratepayers.

In difficult economic times, councils believe ratepayers shouldn't be asked to carry this cost, especially when a cheaper, proven alternative exists.

💬 "I was really excited last week to hear that Council has secured $632,000 through the Australian Government’s regional Partnerships and Precincts Fund to support planning for the Former Wonthaggi Secondary College site.

For a lot of people in Wonthaggi, this site means something personal. I went to school there, and like many locals, I have plenty of memories tied to the place.

…We’re keen to hear some local ideas and thoughts about the former school site along the way. There’s a community engagement session coming up on Sunday 17 May, and I’d encourage people to come along, have a look at the information and have a chat with us about the future of the site."

🌊 What does a rip actually look like?

At Woolamai Beach, community members had the chance to see it for themselves as Professor Rob Brander, better known as "Dr Rip", brought the Science of the Surf to Bass Coast.

Using environmentally safe dye, Dr Rip demonstrated how quickly rip currents can move water from the shoreline out to deeper water, creating a powerful visual reminder of why understanding beach conditions matters.

Even as we move into winter, beach safety is always important. Our coastline is beautiful year-round, but conditions can change quickly and knowing how to spot hazards like rips can help keep you, your family and others safe.

A big thank you to Dr Rip's Science of the Surf , Woolamai Beach SLSC , Life Saving Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and all our regional partners for helping share this important knowledge with the community.

💬 "Being elected Mayor of Bass Coast is a real honour, and one I don’t take lightly. I’m proud to step into this role and continue working alongside our Councillors, staff and community.

For me, local government is about listening, being available, and making sure people feel heard. Council decisions work best when they’re shaped by the people who live here...

One of the conversations happening right now is about the future of the former Wonthaggi Secondary College site. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to get involved through Engage Bass Coast, share your thoughts, or come along to one of the drop-in sessions."
