McBride Tunnel is near the Western Area mine, sited between Number 5 Brace and the rail lines. This is a place to share your memories of growing up in and around Wonthaggi. I love what Parks and the volunteers have done at Eastern Area. But that is only one small part of the great SCM history surrounding us. I spent my childhood in and around the Western Area mines and Number 5 Brace at Wonthaggi.
I lived in Graham St just down from the hospital and many of my mates lived in South Dudley. We used to climb all over Number 5 Brace and we had underground huts in the pines area behind the pony club. We spent a lot of our time along the rail tracks which is now the rail trail. All of that happened around the McBride tunnel entrance and the Rescue Station. Now as an adult as I ride my bike on the rail trail I look at the area and, while the Rescue Station is a red for, the rest of the area s run down and a waste land. I recently contacted the Bass Coast shire about having them transform the area into a park. The location is perfect as it is near the start of the rail trail. Next time you pass this waste land picture what it would look like if it was treed and lawned, if there were tables and seats, if it was cared for and people were able to use it for picnics and recreation. I was told by the shire that it is not their area and I should contact Parks Victoria, which I did. ...but I don't hold out much hope as they have put all of their resources into the Eastern Area mines and they are only interested in basic land management in the western area. If I have sparked your interest then leave a status message and hopefully we can grow some support to turn this waste land into a wonderful parkland asset for our town. It would also be another lasting monument to the brave miners who worked in the Wonthaggi mines and to those who perished in the nearby mines and another memory of our mining history.
