Every year, Battle for Australia Day is commemorated on the first Wednesday of September to commemorate the Australian servicepeople who served on Australia’s home front and in crucial battles during the Second World War, such as the Battle of Coreal Sea, Kokoda Trail and Milne Bay.

The significance of the first Wednesday in September aligns with the Allied forces victor at the Battle of Milne Bay, which marked the first defeat over Japanese forces.

Today we pay tribute to the men and women who served at sea, in the skies, or on the mainland to protect Australia during the Second World War; their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

18 Australians were killed in the battle on this day in 1966.

Just as ANZAC Day marks the Gallipoli landing but has come to honour the service and sacrifice of all wars, Vietnam Veterans Day began with Long Tan but now is in honour of all the 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War.

Today we take a moment to reflect on the endurance and resilience of all who served in Vietnam.

We remember those who lost their lives and recognise the families and friends who were, and continue to be, impacted by service.

Today, and always we ensure that the service of Vietnam veterans maintains its rightful place in Australia's history.

“Fellow citizens, the war is over.”

Today, 81 years ago, victory was declared in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War.

This “glorious moment” as described by Australian prime minister Ben Chifley was one which carried great weight for Australia, and all who had experienced the devastating impact of the war.

Many Australians took to the streets to celebrate, while others in lands far from home, embraced the news and celebrated in their own way.

Australian forces were engaged in campaigns across the Pacific – in New Guinea, Bougainville, New Britain, Borneo, and in the Philippines – and Australian prisoners of the Japanese were spread throughout Asia. The end of the war marked the beginning of their journey home.

Today we pause to remember all who served our nation during the Second World War.
