The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club offer a wide range of opportunities for members including:

- Life Saving Services
Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving C

lub services an area of approximately 101.5 square kilometers; arguably the largest single surf life saving precinct in Australia with 98 kilometers of coastline. During the peak Summer holiday period, Woolamai Beach also hosts Victoria's largest professional Lifeguard Scheme. The Professional Lifeguards are recruited from the volunteer ranks and bolster the existing services to provide beach patrols at Woolamai Beach, Smiths Beach, and the Cowes Beach seven days a week. In addition to the traditional beach patrols, the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club has recently launched a Marine Rescue Service.

- Competition
Competition helps life savers maintain their skills and ensures that they are primed throughout the year for their life saving work. Honing skills and maintaining fitness cannot be underestimated, especially when the lives of children, young people and families depend on them. Competition also assists in raising community awareness for the holiday community, thereby reinforcing the beach safety messages the Club promotes and instilling confidence in visitors and tourists. The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club competes with other surf clubs from around Australia and is proud to have won a number of major titles and awards in recent years.

- Juniors ("Nippers")
Positive values and role models for our young people are an essential part of developing strong and responsible communities. Surf life saving offers options for young people to mix with others, to learn new skills and to model themselves on others who continue to make invaluable contributions to their community. Growing the leaders of tomorrow is a challenge for all communities and surf life saving offers a unique option for young people to develop leadership skills. Developing a healthy island community means making sure its young people have challenges, good friends, positive role models and a vision for the community of the future. Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club continues to lead the field through its Nippers program and is an integral player in the team that helps develop the community of Phillip Island.

- Community Events
The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club runs a number of major community events that help to raise the profile of the Club and increase awareness about its work on Phillip Island. The events bring together other community groups and contribute significantly to the Island's economy. Community events also give the Club an opportunity to showcase its skills and its talented people, such as in the Channel Challenge swim. The tidal nature of the event means inevitably one or two swimmers need to be assisted from the water. The community is able to see first hand how the Club ensures the safety of the event, the boats and resources it has and the speed with which it is able to respond to swimmers.

And that’s a wrap on yet another amazing patrolling season at Woolamai Beach SLSC

Today we put the flags down for the last time this season.

Our volunteer lifesavers have been on patrol every weekend since mid November and have collectively put in thousands of hours so beachgoers can enjoy our beautiful beaches safely.

Our Club is unique in that it is one of the few in Victoria and Australia that patrols two beaches
-Woolamai Beach and Smiths Beach.

Everyone who came to these beaches this summer and swam or entered the water between the flags got to go home safely.

Thank you to all our volunteer lifesavers -whether you patrolled the beaches, trained live savers and lifesavers of the future, helped out with Nippers, served on a committee, helped with events, fixed equipment or the Clubhouse. We are very grateful for your efforts. It all counts.

Please, if you are swimming or entering the water at any of Phillip Island’s beaches throughout the off season, educate yourself on safe swimming conditions, local hazards and risks and safety.
Read the signs at each beach. There are no flags or lifesavers to help guide your safety.
always swim with others, never swim alone
- always swim during daylight
- know your limitations
We will be back to look after the beaches in November!
Stay safe!

Due to limited volunteer lifesaver availability this weekend, Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club will be patrolling Woolamai Beach this weekend, but will not have the capacity to provide life saving services at Smiths Beach.

Woolamai Beach will be patrolled between 1.00pm-5.00pm on Saturday 11 April and 10.00am-4.00pm on Sunday 12 April.

We encourage beachgoers planning to swim or enter the water to do so between the flags at a patrolled beach.

Between now and the conclusion of the Victorian life saving season in mid April, Woolamai Beach SLSC will reassess beach conditions and its volunteer life saver availability each week. The Club will communicate patrol dates, hours and whether it will be able to patrol Smiths Beach in addition to Woolamai Beach.

On the March long weekend Woolamai Beach
SLSC hosted ‘Science of the Surf’ -an incredible community beach safety event.

The event was organised by Bass Coast Shire Council in conjunction with our Club, Life Saving Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Parks and a number of other local emergency service organisations including Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria and also the Westpac Helicopter

Between 150-200 people attended this very engaging event and learnt a lot from Professor Rob Brander (also known as ‘Dr Rip’) as he delivered a very informative session on ‘the
Science of the Surf.

Prof Brander shared vital insights on:
⭐️What are rip currents?
⭐️Types of rip currents
⭐️Are rips dangerous?
⭐️How to spot a rip
⭐️What to do if you get caught in a rip

We also saw the power of a rip first hand as Prof Brander put coloured dye into a rip.
A panel of experts shared their knowledge about community safety, inclusion and beach awareness.
A big thank you to panel members:
⭐️Dr Harpreet Singh Kendra, Senior Lecturer at
Federation University Australia
⭐️Jordie Campbell, Head of Programs at Surfing
Victoria
⭐️Ramzi Hussaini, Diversity and Inclusion Project Co-ordination at Life Saving Victoria
⭐️Erin Close, co Club Captain & Director Member
Wellbeing, Woolamai Beach SLSC.

We voul also like to thank Bass Coast Shire Council and Mayor Rochelle Halstead as well as Jordan Crugnale MP for their attendance and support of the event.

We were privileged to be joined by many members of the Gurdwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh community from Officer in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs - we thank them for being part of the day, some wonderful food, photos of the day and the friendliness of their community.

The event provided an incredible opportunity for connection across many communities and organisations. We look forward to continuing our work with these organisations and communities to continue to improve beach safety and surf awareness.

Wow!!! What a fantastic morning. Thanks so much to for coming to Woolamai Beach SLSC and encouraging conversations around mental health.

A massive thankyou to the Victoria Government Sporting Club Grants Program for 2024-2025 for making this day possible. We are so lucky to receive this grant that has enabled us to give our members such important mental health training.

We all learnt something and despite being a very close knit community, we still found ways to strengthen our connections with our peers. It was a great reminder that no matter how well we know someone, we can always initiate conversations to check in and support our mates. We are so grateful for this opportunity and hope to see you again soon! 🩵🩵🌸
