As I am sure you are all aware, NSW RFS is currently working with NSWFR and NPWS to control several fires in the region
****Due to the sensitive nature of the fires, we have not included on scene photos out of respect for people who have suffered losses as well as privacy concerns****
We currently have a crew at the Koolewong Fire where there has been devestating loss of homes. This fire moved very fast and despite RFS crews and aerial support being on site quickly, the rate of spread in the conditions proved to be extremely difficult to overcome. Despite what Emergency Services threw at the fire, it continued to spread and spotted across Woy Woy Bay, splitting resources in order to work on containing both fires.
The storm that came through last night, as predicted, caused several new fires due to lightning strikes. One in particular has caused a significant fire at Redhead. This fire is still at Watch and Act level with crews working through the night, it is expected this fire will continue for some time.
Between these 2 fires alone, we have seen RFS crews from as far south as Sydney and up to the Hunter stand up and assist with the massive undertaking with these fires.
In addition to these fires, we cannot forget that Bulahdelah is still active and there has also been smaller fires ignite which have required resource allocation to get on top of them before they grow.
Resources are spead thin, crews are tired but they have not and will not complain or stop. When we see what can happen despite the resources we throw at the fires, it emphsises the need for communities to be aware and ready.
We would like to extend our appreciation to all RFS, NSWFR, NPWS crews as well as Police, Ambulance and the incredible Air Crews who have contributed to the fire fighting efforts.
Stay safe, stay informed, stay ready.
