Melangata Station Stay

Melangata Station Stay Melangata Station is a unique Homestead designed by Monsignor John Hawes that offers accommodation in the Homestead as well as bush camping sites nearby.

For many reasons we do not allow visiting dogs. MELANGATA STATION DOES NOT ALLOW VISITING DOGS OR PETS. Melangata Station was first taken up as a pastoral lease in the early 1900s. It has had mixed fortunes over the years and due to drought and the depression was abandon from the 1930s to early 1940s. The Homestead is very unusual as it was designed by Monsignor John Hawes who was a local Priest a

rchitect who was responsible for the design and construction of many buildings in the Midwest of Western Australia including the Catholic Cathedral in Geraldton, Our Lady of Carmel Church and buildings in Mullewa and many others from Perenjori in the south to Carnarvon in the north. Melangata Homestead is the only privately owned residential building he designed that was ever built in Australia and one of only a handful of private buildings in the world. Melangata Station Stay offers fully catered adults only homestead stays. The campground has un powered sites close to the old shearing shed and there are flush toilets and hot showers for your convenience. There is a cottage at the Shearer's quarters that can sleep a family of 3-4 that has access to the cookhouse/ kitchen and bathroom facilities. Our latest addition to our accommodation are our bell tents. they are fully furnished with real off the floor beds the family tent has a queen bed and two singles, the queen tent has a queen bed and comfy chairs to relax in and the twin tent has two single beds. All tents are a short walk to the Shearer's quarters cook house/ kitchen and bathroom facilities. There is plenty of cooking equipment, tables, chairs crockery, cutlery and a fridge for you to use while you stay. We conduct historic homestead tours at 10am daily from April to October and this can be combined with a delicious homestead cooked morning tea of scones jam and cream with real barista coffee. We also offer for larger groups camp oven cooking classes. These can be organised by prior arrangement and are fantastic for large groups travelling together such as escorted tours, 4wdrive club and camper trailer or caravan clubs. We offer guided self drive tagalong tours of the station and these can be arranged on arrival for the next day. We have a few pet animals that guests are welcome to interact with and possibly help feed at feeding time. Melangata Station is situated centrally to beautiful displays of wildflowers when the seasons are good we are also a nice drive away to the Historic town of Cue and Mount Magnet
Along the road to Cue you will also find the Dalgaranga Meteorite Crater, Walga Rock, ( third largest rock in Australia and with an impressive Aboriginal art gallery) and Big Bell mine site. All are worth a visit and all cost absolutely nothing but your time to visit. Melangata, although it has no known gold to be found, is surrounded by known prospecting patches in the area. There are numerous Granite outcrops and Breakaways that provide fantastic opportunities for finding wildflowers and sighting native animals, birds and reptiles. We no longer allow visiting dogs to the station. quite simply this whole area is unsafe for them and we can't in good conscience encourage people to bring their dogs and risk a tragedy. Melangata Station Stay is open all year round in the camp ground and in the Homestead from the 1st of April to October. We are still cleaning up 20 years of rubbish around the homestead and bringing some of the facilities into the 21st century to make not only our lives easier but provide our guests with clean modern facilities so everything is a work
in progress and we ask for your understanding
if things are just not quite there yet. Apparently
Rome wasn't built in a day. We look forward to
seeing you in the future. Jo and Ken.

The builders Brad and Beck toiled all week and finished up a while ago from deconstruction to construction to the fiddly finishing touches they were magicians.
I love it. So much more comfortable for us but also our guests in the future.

History repeating. A different team of builders installed this same pressed metal design in the big dinning room over 100 years ago. Today it's pressed aluminium not pressed tin.

The complete life cycle of our shield shrimp. We were very lucky to see them.

Mother nature is an amazing thing one week from there being thousands of Triops, shield shrimp, tadpole shrimp in this little lake we visited again today and the lake is dry and they have all completed their life cycle and now their decomposing corpses are adding nutrients back into the soil.

On the 11th of April 2021 we were mildly impacted by cyclone Seroja and last night it felt like it had come back for a second visit.
What had been a dry warm day at 6 pm turned into a dust storm and heavy rain for a couple of hours.
Not ideal with a half built wall and no gutters.
Needless to say I can understand why the breezeway was filled in all during the 50s it would have been a nightmare living in this house without it.

The day has arrived and just like that the old wall has gone. The guys from Nelson Building Company are doing a great job. So nice to not have to be the one "holding the other end"
I know I will have no regrets getting this done.
It will be so much more comfortable for us as well as our guests.

Edit. You might also notice down the end of the breezeway there is in fact evidence of a DOOR. Stay tuned as there have and are many changes happening right now.

We have a special little place for you to walk when you come to visit.
The living fossils might still be there too.
