SES Yarram Unit had their final training with Regional trainer, Ant Matters last night in preparation for their Road Rescue Capability Assessment (RRCA) scheduled for May 12th.

The RRCA team worked strongly together to extricate the casualty dummy 'with suspected spinal injury'. This involved a roof roll for the extrication.

If you think volunteering with the SES is for you, SES Yarram Unit meets on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. Click below to find out more and apply:

Today at 11am SES Yarram Unit will march with our fellow first responders and the Yarram community as we commemorate ANZAC Day. We marched together, united in remembrance, to honour the brave Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our countries. We pay our respects and reflect on the enduring legacy of courage and service that defines the ANZAC spirit.

They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We shall remember them.
Lest we forget.

A big thank you to Priscilla Grimme, Operations Manager Unit Support (Act) West Gippsland Unit Support Team for visiting the SES Yarram Unit last night to formally announce that Fiona O’Connor was successful in her interview and will serve the Yarram Community for another two years as SES Yarram Unit Controller.

Fiona has over fifty years of volunteering under her belt. It began in her university years with a community education project to help disadvantaged school students, then volunteering in a number of environmental programs, including landcare, bush reforestation, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, then on to volunteering for St Vincent de Paul, VICSES and Red Cross Patient Transport and Red Cross Emergency Services. Last year, Fiona joined Future of Yarram’s Strzelecki Koala Innovation Working Group as a committee member. Fiona began volunteering with VICSES in 2014 and took on the additional role of a Peer Support Officer with VICSES in 2022.

We are incredibly grateful that Fiona has volunteered to serve as Unit Controller for us. “I have a vision for Yarram SES. In the next two years, I want to ensure our unit is sustainable so we can continue to work with other emergency responders in serving our community and keeping it safe,” said Fiona. With her vision and the ongoing support from the regional Unit Support Team (UST), we can’t wait to see what the next couple of years hold for the SES Yarram Unit. Please join us in congratulating Fiona on this achievement and in thanking her for her continued service to the community.

Wednesday training nights at SES Yarram Unit have been all about road crash rescue lately as our six-member team prepares for its Road Rescue Capability Assessment (RRCA).

Regional trainer Ant Matters put the team through their paces this week during a full rehearsal from emergency call-out to post incident debrief. The team worked well to remove parts of the car to extricate the casualty dummy safely.

This involved good action planning, communication and teamwork to identify site hazards, ensure a safe working space, stabilise the vehicle, manage glass, use spreaders and cutters to remove doors and pillars and finally extricate the casualty safely within an hour.

The team will have a final dress rehearsal before their RRCA in May that, once passed, will give SES Yarram Unit road crash rescue accreditation for another three years.
