14 JUL 2026 | Celebration day
๐ 30 years of KIEEC & 50 years of Deadly โค๏ธ๐ค๐
Wow! What a fabulous day on Konomie yesterday ๐ Thank you to everyone who came to share in our celebration day to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre and to recognise 50 years of Deadly for National NAIDOC week.
We cannot thank yesterday's attendees enough for creating such a positive, hopeful and collaborative energy across the day. It was really special to bring everyone together in celebration of this special place, both reflecting on the past 30 years and looking ahead to the future.
We were privileged to have many Woppaburra Community join us with representatives from Woppaburra Saltwater Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, Woppaburra TUMRA Aboriginal Corporation and Woppaburra Land Trust in attendance.
Special thanks to Aunty Julie Blair for Welcoming us onto Country, to Uncle Nerark Morris and his son, Zac, for sharing a traditional smoking ceremony with us, and for Warinkil Aunty Glenice Croft and Uncle Sonny Van Issum for sharing their reflections on the relationship between Woppaburra community and the centre. We know that our work is enriched, and cannot truly succeed, without learning from and walking alongside the First Peoples of this land, who have been
educators and Custodians of Country for tens of thousands of years. Thank you ๐
To all the staff and volunteers from the KIEEC P&C Association for their tireless work behind the scenes preparing our very unique, isolated island location for this event, your efforts were obvious on the day with so many comments about how tidy and well-cared for the centre ground and facilities are. Thank you and well done ๐
To our beautiful student group from Woorabinda State School, what an absolute credit to your community you all are! We loved seeing you explore, be curious and learn from this special place; your energy was infectious! โจ๏ธ
Reflecting on the past 30 years of learning on, with and from Konomie, we are very excited to continue "inspiring future custodians through immersive island learning" into the future.
What a great way to start Term 3!!
