🔥 Update: The Bush Fire Danger Period for Wingecarribee will commence two weeks earlier this year, from 14 September.

Today, 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) commence their Bush Fire Danger Period, with several areas beginning a month earlier than normal due to the prevailing dry conditions.

Additionally, two LGA's will commence their Bush Fire Danger Period on 14 September, which is two weeks earlier than normal.

Residents and land holders should ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.

Know the risks for your area, have a bush fire survival plan and discuss what you and your family will do if threatened by fire. For more information, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

Plan what you will take in advance and consider keeping a go-bag so you’re ready to move quickly.

Remember to bring important documents such as passports and birth certificates and medical prescriptions. Also, ensure you pack changes of clothes, water, non-perishable food, chargers, and any medications you may need.

It may be some time before it will be safe for you to return home.

Where will you and your family go to stay safe? Your family may not be together when you decide to leave, so it’s important to organise a meeting place. Not all evacuation centers cater for pets, so if you have pets, consider places that allow them to stay too.

Earlier today, Yerrinbool Rural Fire Brigade responded alongside other local brigades to a grass fire in Pheasants Nest.

Thankfully, the fire was brought under control quickly, but it serves as a timely reminder that pile burns can quickly become uncontrolled if they are not properly managed.

If you're planning to conduct a pile burn, please make sure you follow these important steps:

✅ Check your property's eligibility. In Wingecarribee Shire Council, backyard pile burns are only permitted on properties 4,000m² or larger. You can check your property's eligibility using Wingecarribee Shire Council's online mapping tool. (See comments for link)

✅ Notify the NSW Rural Fire Service. You need to complete the online burn notification before lighting your pile. This include notifying you immediate neighbours you'll be conducting a pile burn. (See comments for link)

✅ Monitor your burn at all times. Never leave a pile burn unattended. Keep it to a manageable size, have water available and ensure the fire is completely extinguished or safe if you need to leave.

🔥 Small recreational fires (such as those used for cooking or in a fire pit) are still permitted when conditions allow, but you must always check for Total Fire Bans or No Burn Notices before lighting any fire.
