Nepali Family Project, run by Nepali Famliy Inc (Qld) works with children and young people identified by the Nepalese community of Tansen as being in need, including orphans, abandoned, and special needs children who require care and education. The aim is to bring these young people to a standard of health, education and training such that they may find useful occupations and support themselves an

d their families. The project runs entirely on donations and fundraising activities with the support of many volunteers. Donations of clothes, shoes, books and computer equipment are also collected and taken to Nepal as excess luggage kindly provided by Cathy Pacific Airways. In general the project aims to identify and support care at home or with relatives; admission to a registered children’s home is seen only as a last resort. Funding assistance to responsible relatives to cover food and education costs has been successful. The project works on Maslo's hierarchy of needs and makes the provision of food, shelter and clothing always number one priority. Enrolment in a suitable educational establishment with full financial support will be offered up to Grade 12 if the student is capable and passes grades. Due to the high cost, tertiary education can be offered only with specified support from willing donors. Practical/technical courses are offered where possible to give skills to enable a living to be earned. Poor children have few opportunities to acquire life-skills. Beyond sustenance and education we encourage many enjoyable outings and activities aimed to inculcate sporting prowess, appreciation of nature and financial and other decision making. Vacation activities provide swimming, jungle trips, eating-out, games and shopping experiences, interlocked with bible appreciation and worship. Attendance at a church of their choice is welcomed but is totally voluntary. The Project is unapologetically Christian and with the consent of their families will offer prayer, and leadership to those who request it.
