🌿✨ **Victory for Nature, Hope for the Future** ✨🌿

Today, we celebrate a monumental step forward in protecting Aruba’s natural heritage. With the judge’s verdict on Isla di Oro, the voice of nature has been heard loud and clear: our ecosystems are not for sale—they are sacred.

🦜🌊 From the mangroves to the coral reefs, from the birds that nest in our wetlands to the communities that cherish these lands, this is a win for all of us. It’s a reminder that when we stand together for nature, we shape a future that honors both our culture and our environment.

Let this be a call to action, a celebration, and a promise: we will continue to protect, preserve, and promote the natural beauty of Savaneta for generations to come.

💚 Thank you to everyone who stood firm, raised their voice, and believed in a better way forward. Nature has won today—and so have we.

We would like to share the following,

Replacing "Eagle Beach" with "Savaneta shores (Ss)", the future of Commandeursbaai need to be protected

(Ss) Eagle Beach Fading

They came with dollars, came with deeds,
Claiming shores they do not need.
Didn’t ask, didn’t see,
Didn’t care ‘bout you or me.

(Ss) Eagle Beach, so wide, so free,
A home for roots, for history.
Where turtles rose from moonlit sand,
Now swallowed up by greedy hands.

Bit by bit, they carved away,
Selling off what should have stayed.
No more space, no more shade,
Unless you pay, unless they’re paid.

Jet skis slice the waters deep,
Drowning out the voices weak.
Palapas rise where trees once stood,
They took it all—because they could.

A place once ours, a place to roam,
Now fenced and owned, now not our home.
The winds still call, the waves still plead,
But profits speak much louder, see?

Yet hear me now, and hear me clear,
We won’t bow, we won’t disappear.
Take those barriers, tear them down,
This is our beach, this our town.

So, stand up, rise up, make them see,
A fence can’t break a people free.
We fight today, we fight again,
Because the beach belongs to us, my friend.

Urgent: Flooding Risk in Savaneta Due to Construction at Rooi Mouth. Read the attached rainwater run-off report from December 2020. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DjnaeRxepn6f9QW1knYrMbtvFvLQ58Tu/view?usp=sharing

It has been over a year since the Department of Public Works (DOW) of Aruba was made aware of the serious risks posed by the construction approved by the Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DIP) in the mouth of the Rooi in Savaneta. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YSFkTqyQ3sG-70_rOL2_OcJanL2wiKS_/view?usp=sharing

This project, built right in the path where rainwater naturally flows, has created a dangerous situation for the environment and the local community.

The construction has disrupted the area's water flow by blocking the natural drainage of rainwater into the Salina and the ocean, causing severe flooding in the neighborhood. When rain falls, the water can no longer follow its natural path, leading to dangerous runoff and inundation of homes, streets & surrounding areas. This creates immediate risks to residents and businesses and exacerbates long-term environmental problems, as the natural ecosystem can no longer absorb and manage the water as it once did.

The consequences of this decision are clear: the construction is putting the health of the area's inhabitants at risk (mosquitoes, mold), damaging property (saturated foundations), and altering the delicate balance of the local environment (reports of many dead crabs). We at Fundacion Proteccion y Conservacion di Commandeursbaai call on the authorities to urgently address the flooding issues and restore the natural drainage pathways as stated in the report as mentioned above to protect the people and the land of Savaneta.

This is an issue of public safety and environmental preservation—one that cannot be ignored. We need your support to ensure that the right decisions are made to protect our community and the natural environment for future generations.

Request to all Curacaoan divers and snorkelers: Did you find a dead parrotfish?

At the moment we are getting a lot of reports of parrotfishes (gutu's) that seemingly drop dead from the water column.... A likely candidate causing this mortality (and associated weird behavior right before the parrotfishes die) are cyanobacteria that grow increasingly more often among the food targetted by parrotfishes, i.e., algae that grow on the bottom. Some of these cyanobacteria contain nasty toxins which could cause parrotfishes (and other fishes that eat them) to die. We would like to check if this is indeed what is currently happening in Curacao. So.... if you found a recently dead parrotfish like the one on the picture and are willing to take it with you, could you please drop it off at Carmabi (Piscaderabaai). It would be best to freeze the fish as soon as possible and bring it over frozen. Questions? Please ask..... Thanks in advance to those willing to help....

An explanation for why people are being stung in the water at Caracasbaai ...

Every year at the end of the rainy season, lots of water comes out the big rivers in South America as snow in the mountains there begins to melt. Each year, this water flushes nutrients into the coastal Caribbean seas bordering the southamerican mainland where phytoplankton increases in abundance. As waters move west (i,e., in our direction) this phytoplankton becomes eaten by zooplankton that also increases in abundance every year around this time (sometimes even up to ~April).

As a result, one can find many types of "gelatinous creatures" in Curacaoan waters for a while... These represent a wide variety of zooplankton species and some of these can sting whereas many do not. Below are a few examples.... One of the species that can sting is likeley responsible for the incident in Caracasbaai, but this could also have been a species of zooplankton that is too small to see with the bare eye..... Lots of possible "candidates" that could have been quilty of stinging people, but with the above, we hope to have explained why these zooplankters are around right now each year....
