The Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTI) wishes to inform the public that the Constitution River Project - Phase III will conclude in six weeks weather permitting, with remedial works and site preparation.

The project, which has been ongoing for 18 months, includes reconstructive work to the river channel and its environs.

Last Thursday, the C.O. Williams Construction team began removing the dam that was constructed in the early stages of the project, which prevented water from flowing along the Constitution Bridge to the James A. Tudor Roundabout in The City.

As a result of the partial removal of the dam, the area of the river channel to the roundabout has been refilled with water.

The BTI thanks the public for their patience and cooperation during the project.

Smooth progress continues to be made as Phase III of the Constitution River Project is being executed by the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTI) and carried out by the C.O. Williams Construction company.

Phase III of the project includes the dredging and cleaning of the section of the canal that runs from Constitution Road to the James A. Tudor Roundabout in Halls Road, St. Michael.

The upgrade forms part of a wider urban renewal and regeneration project that is aimed at improving infrastructure, while focusing on solving problems such as flooding which impact the residents of the area and others that traverse the area.

The project, which is being executed in an environmentally friendly manner, will also address issues relating to stagnant water that could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Phase I and Phase II of the Constitution River upgrade project included work from Fairchild Street to the bridge along Constitution Road.

The historic Golden Square Freedom Park was officially opened by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on Saturday, November 27th, 2021, with a colourful, celebratory two-hour ceremony.

Prime Minister Mottley was joined by President Dame Sandra Mason, Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham, and Members of Cabinet, among other dignitaries.

Prime Minister Mottley urged Barbadians to remember Clement Payne’s call to forever educate and agitate, but not to violate.

Mottley stressed that the loss of life or the loss of liberty are prices too dear to pay “especially if we can work together as one people”.

Founder of the Clement Payne Movement and CARICOM Ambassador, David Commissiong, said the opening of the Freedom Park was a great day for him personally and for all the members and supporters of the Movement, who laboured diligently over a period of 33 years.

The Pan Africanist challenged Barbadians to play a role in helping to realize Payne’s vision, by embracing “this magnificent two-acre Golden Square Freedom Park and making it the mecca of civic engagement, public education, participatory citizenship, conscious artistic expression and progressive and even revolutionary consciousness in the new republic of Barbados”.

Golden Square Freedom Park forms part of the Bridgetown Transformation Project which was executed by the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTI). This aspect of the project included the demolition of the Old NIS Building, the Barbados Fire Service, and the temporary markets on Probyn Street in Bridgetown.
