Paredos will host two more Saturday sessions at the Princess Margaret Secondary School on November 23rd and December 7th.

Each session will have 3 different presentations on topics such as parenting in a digital age, counting the cost, and recognizing an unhealthy child. Feel free to sign up for these sessions because there are many areas to discuss among fellow parents.

Last Saturday, Sean from Supreme Counseling joined us to discuss the root causes and effects of bullying.

Interestingly, every parent admitted to experiencing bullying or indirectly causing their children to feel bullied at home. This can often turn into misdirected anger and children becoming the aggressor at school or later in life.

Correcting parenting habits means noticing the actions taken at home that can leave children feeling misunderstood, alone, or different.

Knowing yourself means examining your flaws and understanding how you are perceived by your children. During the primary stages of socialization, a child is learning behaviors, communication styles, and coping mechanisms from the parent.

For us to course correct parents must understand that children mimic their parent’s behavior.

The Caribbean Institute for Social & Emotional Learning is continuing the Parentwise sessions at the St. Leonards Church in St. Michael.

Last night’s introductory session focused on understanding the importance of emotions. Feeling a particular emotion is neither good nor bad, it is how we use those emotions and control our thoughts.

Understanding that anger, frustration, and anxiousness are only temporary can help communication between the parent and the child. Taking a moment to pause means that you think about the harm an emotion, or feeling, can drive you to do.

We’ve been receiving a lot of questions such as the takeaways from this program. Many parents have found that their parenting skills start with preconceived notions about what parenting looks like. The program has made parents question what they know about parenting and analyze the effectiveness of their parenting skills.

Parenting does not come with a manual and the National Peace Program recognizes that much of the work has to be internal and focused on addressing the connection between the parent and the child.

The discussion of parenting is intergenerational and many of today’s parents are using the skills taught to them by their parents. Through parenting programs like Parentwise, the skills of effective co-parenting, effective communication, and discipline are learned.

It is this generation of parents that will guide, influence, and equip the youth with much-needed soft skills.
