A FLASH-FLOOD WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS
Issued: Mon, 17 Aug 2026 08:42 AM

A tropical wave affecting the island is currently generating moderate to heavy showers across the island, which will generate flooding across low-lying areas in Barbados. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a flash-flood warning for Barbados.

There is a high possibility of significant flooding, which may result in runoff from higher elevations. Soil erosion/land slippage on
exposed or scarred land surfaces. Water settlements on roads and fields. Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.). Large objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast moving water flows. Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads. Delays on traffic routes with some roads being impassable or cutoff in and out of minor towns.

This Flash Flood Warning was issued at 8:30 this morning 17th August 2026 and will be updated/terminated at 12 noon today or sooner if conditions warrant.

A FLASH-FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS
Issued: Mon, 17 Aug 2026 06:11 AM
A tropical wave affecting the island is generating occasional moderate to heavy showers across the island, which could generate flooding across low-lying areas in Barbados. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a flash-flood watch for Barbados.

**** Hazard Info ****
Possible Impacts
There is the possibility of significant flooding, which may result in soil erosion on bare or scarred land surfaces. Water settlements on
roads and fields may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions in and out of the city. Increases in water levels of
existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.). Marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/water canals and on property.
Residents and visitors should also be aware that this watch could elevate to a warning.

What you should do
The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM, and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

Discussion
Overnight, up to an inch of rainfall was recorded as a tropical wave approached the island. As the wave continues to affect today with a
favorable upper-level environment, there is the potential for moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and an additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. Instability will persist overnight; however, a gradual reduction in shower activity is expected.

General Information
A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in
flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.
This Flash-Flood Watch was issued at 6 am and will be updated/terminated at 12 Noon today, Monday 17th August 2026 or sooner if conditions
warrant.

SMALL CRAFT AND HIGH SURF WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS
Issued: Fri, 14 Aug 2026 11 AM

Windspeed across Barbados and its marine space have increased today Friday 14th August, 2026. These strong winds are generating choppy sea conditions along the coastlines of Barbados and in open water. Additionally, swell heights have increased as a direct result of these winds and are forecast to further deteriorate into tonight. Therefore, the SMALL CRAFT AND HIGH SURF WARNING remains in effect for Barbados. These conditions are predicted to peak tonight into Saturday, 15th August 2026, with an improvement on Sunday.

**** Hazard Info ****
Possible Impacts
Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells which can be hazardous to some vessels. Operation of smaller vessels may be difficult at times due to large swells. Some beach erosion is inevitable with some beaches submerged, particularly below the cliffs and specifically at times of high tide. There is the increased possibility of rip currents and frequent overtopping of waves on to property and roads in very close proximity to the shoreline.
