Democratic Labour Party

Democratic Labour Party The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is a political party in Barbados.

After a short time of four years in the House of Assembly as a member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Errol Walton Barrow, James Cameron Tudor, Frederick Smith and 26 others broke way with the philosophy and empty promise of the BLP and formed the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). The Democratic Labour Party from its birth in 1955 fought for transformation of Barbados into a Social Democracy and a

Just Society. At the heart of the DLP’s philosophy is the youth, young people, and their role in advancement of Barbados and its people. With the introduction of Free Secondary Education, the establishment of the Cave Hill Campus of The University of the West Indies, the Barbados Community College and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, the DLP has transformed our nation from the ideology of the plantocracy, which purported that parental wealth or friends of the wealthy justified ones right to higher education; to a society where regardless of our social or economic status you are given an equal chance to take you rightful place in the advancement of our nation. In addition to Free Education, the DLP can also be credited with advancement in Health Care, the School Meals Service, accelerated industrialization and job creation; the development of the Tourism Industry, leading Barbados to Independence and the co-establishment of CARIFTA the forerunner of today’s CARICOM. Today’s Democrats and the DLP continue to fight for the advancement of our Nation and for the continual creation of a Just Society. Recognizing that Barbados is more than an economy, it is a Society, at the heart of our pursuits is the empowerment of people. Empowerment by removing the strangle holds of bad economic management, repairing our health care system, and the creation of backward linkages between the economy’s forerunners, such as tourism and International Business, with agriculture and the fishing industry; and manufacturing. Additionally, we are focussed on the empowerment and the self-reliance of our people by the creation of new business through entrepreneurship. The Democratic Labour Party transformed Barbados from a collection of villages into a proud nation – is better for Barbados and all Bajans.

Statement of the Executive of the Young Democrats in support of President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood and General Secretary Mr. Steve Blackett

The Executive of the Young Democrats wish to fully support the Executive Council of the Democratic Labour Party in reposing their confidence in the elected President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood and General Secretary Mr. Steve Blackett as they remain in their roles.

We call for an end to the disorderly conduct and arbitrary actions that are not in keeping with the democratic principles of the institution. The Young Dems felt it necessary to publicly support its comrades and condemn the ill-discipline lest its silence be perceived as condoning autocratic behaviour of a few misguided individuals which culminated in the appalling actions which took place on the headquarters property last Thursday, 16th May 2024. We condemn any actions that seek to truncate the rights of individuals. We also are appalled at the acts of vandalism witnessed on a property that many of us Party have worked tirelessly to raise funds to maintain.

Throughout its 69-year-old history our Party has always regarded its constitution as the blueprint that governs its operations, arms and functions, like any other entity. Every member knows that the DLP has a process for dealing with matters within its arms.

We have looked on with shock and horror at behaviour which we would ordinarily frown upon in the society at large, taking place at our own headquarters. Barbados is currently witnessing a decline in law and order and our job as custodians of one of the oldest and most respected political parties in the region is to set an example for our youth.

The DLP must be beyond reproach in its own affairs to demonstrate to Barbadians that we can be trusted to govern a country and we are certain citizens do not expect this type of behaviour from people who want to lead this country. The sudden introduction of behaviours likened to totalitarian dictatorships- of seeking to suspend, sanction and expel members without charges or hearings and in their absence- and the destruction of property, cannot and will not be condoned.

The DLP has never been accustomed to such and it will not be accepted by this organ of the Party. What is particularly disturbing is that many of the perpetrators are mature members. The Young Dems stand ready to support any actions that will lead to a restoration of the discipline and decorum and the orderly conduct of our affairs to which we are accustomed.
We look forward to hearing from you.

*Statement from the Executive of the Democratic League of Women in Support of the Elected Leadership of the DLP*

The Executive of Democratic League of Women is categorically supporting the Democratic Labour Party’s rules, regulations and its Constitution.

While reinforcing the need for unity in our institution, we cannot condone or legitimize illegal acts on our property or in this country. Furthermore, we cannot be complicit to such acts as they do not augur well for the youth of this country. The League, as an arm of the Democratic Labour Party, calls for an end to the disorderly conduct and arbitrary actions which are not in keeping with the democratic principles of the institution. Further we condemn illegitimate behavior and conduct.

We stand with the decision of the Executive Council of the Party to repose confidence in our elected officials, Mr. Steve Blackett, as our General Secretary and Dr. Ronnie Yearwood as President.

While public displays of ill-discipline of a few members have come to the public space, silence cannot be where we stand as an organisation on these matters. We admonish any type of unlawful acts, which is not and has never been a part of this Party’s ideology. It is fundamental that all considered know we stand on the side of the Democratic Labour Party’s Constitution and on principles of human integrity which are at the heart of our institution’s governance.

Throughout its 69-year-old history our Party has always regarded its constitution as the blueprint that governs its operations, arms and functions, like any other entity. In standing firm to our Constitution that has guided this institution, the Executive of the League recognizes, like all members in this Party, that the DLP has due process for dealing with matters within its arms, its elected officers and its members. This must be upheld above all else.

The League stands ready to support any actions which will lead to a restoration of the discipline and decorum and the orderly conduct of our affairs to which we are accustomed as the Democratic Labour Party.

*STATEMENT BY THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY TO CLARIFY PUBLIC MISINFORMATION*

The Democratic Labour Party wishes to clarify misinformation in the public domain regarding the functioning of its elected leadership, General Secretary, Mr. Steven Blackett and President, Dr. Ronnie Yearwood.

The DLP categorically restates the position of the Party, its elected leadership, and the Executive Council, which is responsible for the direction and management of the Party. The General Secretary, Mr. Steven D. Blackett and President, Dr. Ronnie Yearwood remain in their duly elected roles as voted by the membership of the DLP in August 2023.

The Party wishes to assure its members and the public that every effort is being made to conduct its business in an orderly manner. We don't condone and deeply regret the deplorable conduct of Mr. Pedro Shepherd, as an officer of the Party, and the others who, broke and entered the DLP Headquarters on 16 May 2024, and Mr. Shepherd's subsequent utterances in the public to contravene the DLP and its Constitution. We are making every lawful effort to deal with this matter.

We appreciate that many people are looking to the Democratic Labour Party to be their voice, a credible Opposition Party, and Government-in-waiting.

Again, we condemn and deeply regret the conduct of Mr. Shepherd and others.

We will continue to advocate for the people of Barbados.

We will remain focused on the pertinent issues affecting the country.
