Last week, our Science & Technology Campers took a fun and fascinating behind-the-scenes look of the science behind one of Barbados’ most iconic industries! 🧪🌱🥃

The campers toured the Foursquare Rum Distillery, exploring the journey from sugar cane to rum and discovering the science happening along the way.

They learned how molasses is a by-product of sugar production, explored the fermentation process and the gases produced during fermentation, and even got to taste fresh sugar cane! 🌱

From touring the distillery and its facilities to seeing science applied in a real-world setting, our campers experienced how science, technology and innovation connect with Barbados’ heritage and industries.

Who knew learning could be this sweet? 🍬🔬

🌊🔬 From the classroom to the coastline!

Our week 2 field trip to Drill Hall Beach gave campers the chance to experience science in action.

With guidance from volunteers from UWI, campers explored important topics such as ocean acidity, sargassum seaweed, and beach erosion while learning about the vital role our coastal ecosystems play in everyday life.

The adventure continued with an exciting Acids & Bases scavenger hunt, where campers applied their knowledge in a fun and interactive way before testing the pH of seawater and comparing their findings. They also had the opportunity to observe a variety of intertidal organisms up close, including sea urchins, sea slugs, sea centipedes, and several species of crabs. 🦀✨

Every activity encouraged our young scientists to ask questions, make observations, and discover the world around them through hands-on learning.

🤖✨ From learning to creating, our campers put their imagination and problem-solving skills to work during another exciting day at the MIST Science and Technology Summer Camp!

Our young innovators explored the fascinating world of robotics by discovering what robots are, understanding how they work, and building robots of their very own. The excitement didn't stop there — campers had the opportunity to test, experiment with, and showcase their finished creations.

Activities like these encourage creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and innovation while inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and inventors.

The future is bright, and these young minds are helping to build it, one robot at a time. 🚀

There's nothing more rewarding than seeing learning come to life.

Our MIST Summer Camp participants explored the fundamentals of electricity by building circuits and investigating the properties of conductors and insulators through interactive, hands-on activities.

Their enthusiasm and understanding were on full display during the Week 1 presentations, where campers confidently explained these scientific concepts in their own words to their peers and facilitators. It was a wonderful demonstration of how experiential learning can inspire curiosity, build confidence, and deepen understanding.

We're proud of our campers' achievements and look forward to seeing their continued growth as they explore even more exciting STEM topics throughout the camp.

📢 Notice to MIST Science & Technology Summer Camp Parents and Guardians

Please be advised that the MIST Science & Technology Summer Camp will be closed on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, in observance of the funeral of The Late Honorable Sir Garfield Sobers.

Camp activities will resume as scheduled on the following day.

We thank all parents, guardians, and campers for their understanding as we join the nation in paying tribute to one of Barbados' greatest national icons.
