📌🇨🇺 Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba

In an act of subordination to the United States' policy of aggression, Colombia's President-elect announces that he will sever ties with Cuba

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba rejects the statements made on July 26 by Colombia's President-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella Otero, in which he announced that he will close his country's Embassy in Havana and that his administration will have no relations whatsoever with Cuba.

These statements depart from the historic ties of friendship and brotherhood that have long united Cuba and Colombia.

Should this decision be carried out, despite having no legitimate justification and serving none of Colombia's national interests, it would clearly demonstrate the incoming Colombian government's subordination to the policy of division and confrontation among our nations that has long been promoted by the United States, as well as its links to the most disreputable and vulgar sectors of anti-Cuban politics in that country.

Nothing could be further removed from the ideals of Latin American and Caribbean unity championed by the founding fathers of both nations and to which the peoples of the region have devoted so much commitment and sacrifice.

Cuba and Colombia maintain a constructive bilateral relationship that has achieved significant progress in trade and economic relations, cooperation, and academic exchanges, to the benefit of both peoples. Cuba has consistently sought to expand and strengthen these ties.

Cuba knows that this hostile and unfounded action does not reflect the sentiments of the brotherly Colombian people, whom we have supported tirelessly for decades in their pursuit of peace through a negotiated political solution to their internal armed conflict.

Cuba will honor its commitments to the young Colombians studying Medicine in our country as part of the Peace Agreements signed in Havana in 2016.

The brotherhood between our peoples and nations will prevail over any attempt to undermine it.

Bridgetown, July 26, 2026. As part of the commemorative activities marking Cuba's National Rebellion Day and Barbados' Day of National Significance, representatives of solidarity organizations, Cubans residing in Barbados, members of the Cuban State Mission, and friends of Cuba took part in a day of tribute to the historic struggles of both peoples, highlighting the shared ideals of justice, sovereignty, and dignity that unite the two nations.

As part of the commemorations, participants embarked on a tour of several historic sites in Barbados associated with the country's social and anti-colonial struggles, in observance of the Day of National Significance. During the tour, they also visited the Monument to the Victims of the Barbados Crime, where tribute was paid to the 73 victims of the 1976 terrorist attack against Cubana de Aviación Flight 455, while also commemorating Cuba's National Rebellion Day and reaffirming the commitment to peace, solidarity, and historical memory.

The day's activities concluded in the evening with the Day of National Significance Ceremony, which also provided an opportunity to commemorate Cuba's National Rebellion Day. The event featured young voices reflecting on the role of new generations in shaping the future of their peoples. Representing the Cuban State Mission, young diplomat Roberto Santiago Aquino Bernal paid tribute to the Generation of the Centennial, recalled the legacy of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, and highlighted the historic significance of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks as "the beginning of a Revolution that would forever change the history of Cuba."

In his remarks, he emphasized that July 26 remains a symbol of the defense of sovereignty, social justice, and national dignity, while underscoring the historic parallel between this date and the 1937 popular uprising in Barbados, both inspired by their peoples' aspiration for freedom and self-determination.

At both events, special tribute was paid to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, just days before the commemoration of the centenary of his birth, highlighting the enduring relevance of his thought and legacy for new generations.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba.

Cuba rejects, in the strongest terms, the report published on July 20 by the United States Department of State, concerning Cuba's alleged subversive influence against that country. This is a mediocre propaganda pamphlet. It seeks to bolster the mendacious message that Cuba constitutes a threat to the United States, a pretext that the U.S. government uses for collective punishment and genocide against the Cuban people. Through the construction of accusatory narratives, it aims to fabricate support for a potential military aggression.

It is hypocritical for the State Department to accuse Cuba of promoting subversive activities when it is well known that the U.S. government allocates tens of millions of dollars from its federal budget each year to subvert internal order in Cuba, provoke hunger and desperation, and overthrow the Cuban government. This is done by the same government that has a sordid history of interference and violations of international law, that carries out extrajudicial executions in international waters, practices political assassination, sponsors acts of genocide, attacks sovereign countries on every continent, and interferes in the electoral processes of sovereign states.

It is also hypocritical to insist on the lie of labeling Cuba a state sponsor of terrorism. It is evident that neither this report nor any other can present evidence, not even the slightest indication, for such an illegitimate accusation, because it simply does not exist, as is known to specialized agencies of the U.S. government itself. It is, however, common knowledge that those who finance, organize, and instigate violent and terrorist acts against Cuba have found protection and total impunity on U.S. soil.

This report fits into the discourse of supposed “left-wing terrorism,” a novel concept that the U.S. government, and in particular its Secretary of State, are eager to promote as the new enemy. They seek to attack every progressive trait, social commitment, or leftist expression both within and outside the United States, to increase repression, and to establish a neo-McCarthyism.

The aim is, in particular, to repress and attack the American population itself and to intimidate those who express solidarity, including those who denounce their government's unjust aggression against Cuba. It is recognized that opposition to the energy embargo, the strangulation of the Cuban economy, and the threat of military aggression is growing in the United States, including among Cubans living there and their descendants.

The State Department insists on questioning Cuba's ties with other sovereign nations, as if international law had disappeared. It manipulates and distorts Cuba's widely recognized history of solidarity, anti-colonialist and internationalist stance, even within the United States. Every year, Cuba suffers repeated and forceful isolation at the United Nations for refusing to end the economic blockade.

Unable to conceal its hidden admiration for the epic of the Cuban Revolution, the report reveals the fear of a nuclear superpower in the face of the example of social justice and the defense of sovereignty. It demonstrates an inferiority complex toward a national program that prioritizes the people over the elites.

As it has always done, Cuba will continue to foster friendly relations with the people and institutions of the United States, in strict adherence to international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
