Within recent years Barbados’ tourism planners, recognising the fact that the island has become a mature touristic destination, have encouraged the diversification of Barbados’ touristic product to remain competitive in the international tourism market. One ‘new’ direction has been the recent emphasis on the development of eco-tourism or natural heritage tourism.

NEW CRUISE TERMINAL:

Royal Caribbean and Barbados partner to build $330 million cruise terminal:

BRIDGETOWN – According to recent reports from our news partner Caribbean News Now, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is partnering with Barbados to build a brand new state-of-the-art cruise terminal on the island that will cost over $300 million. The new facility will accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

George Hutson, Barbados Minister of International Transport and International Business, announced the two year project.

“If we are going to remain relevant, if we are going to capitalize on the opportunities available from cruise tourism, we must renew our plant from the basic infrastructure currently existing to one which will accommodate and service the increasingly large cruise ships,” he said.

According to Hutson, Barbados is hoping the new cruise terminal will attract more cruise ships to the island, which in turn will lead to increasing revenue generated by cruise passengers on the island.

The new terminal will be completed in two phases; the first phase will cost $300 million and will include two cruise piers, arrival and departure facilities, along with parking lots. The development will involve reclaiming 15 acres of land from the sea, 100,000 square feet of which will be provided for commercial activity. Dredging is slated to begin in November.

Cruise tourism in Barbados has grown from 127,000 in 1985 to 726,543 last year. The best year ever for cruise passenger traffic to the island was 2004 when 812,863 people visited the island

INTERVIEW WITH BARBADOS MINISTER OF TOURISM RICHARD SEALY.

By Alexander Britell

The Caribbean tourism sector is in a period of change, as the region seeks to emerge from the global downturn. As Caribbean nations like Barbados look to move beyond the traditional “sun, sand and sea” attraction, they are increasingly moving to diversify their tourism product — from areas like medical tourism to events-based product. And with continued financial uncertainty in some of the Caribbean’s feeder markets like the United States and Europe, the region is starting to look at new markets — from emerging power Brazil to the Far East. To learn more about how Barbados is working to move its tourism sector into the future, Caribbean Journal talked to Tourism Minister Richard Sealy about the promise of events tourism, the potential of Latin America and the Chinese question.

NOTICE:

Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) woos Toronto's top selling travel agents

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the region’s tourism development agency, is moving to motivate Canadian travel agents to more vigorously sell the Caribbean as a luxury destination.

UP to 100 of the top selling travel agents in the Greater Toronto area will be exposed to opportunities for luxury travel in the Caribbean and how to persuade holidaymakers to choose the region at a workshop and trade show during Caribbean Week in Toronto next month.

The workshop, Tapping into the Lucrative Niche of Luxury Travel, is organized by the CTO’s New York office and will be conducted by the certified travel manager and travel blogger, Steve Gillick. Mr. Gillick is the architect and first president of the national organization, the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors, the educational trade association for the Canadian travel industry.

“There are millions of luxury travellers on the road and they are eager for new experiences. This is a multi-billion dollar industry that represents a tremendous opportunity for travel agents. In the Caribbean, luxury travel is growing significantly as more boutique hotels and resorts are being built to tap into this niche,” said Sylma Brown, CTO’s New York-based director of marketing for the Americas.

“This Workshop is designed to help travel agents learn how to identify who these travellers are and where to find them. It is also an opportunity to network and quiz the feature speaker and the representatives of CTO member countries who will be there as well,” she added.

Ms. Brown added that CTO was organizing the workshop to support the efforts of member countries in the marketplace, in a bid to motivate the travel agents to persuade their clients to consider the Caribbean as a perfect destination for a luxury holiday.

As part of the workshop, Mr Gillick will also focus on the value of luxury travel and where to find the people who travel on luxury holidays.
The event will take place from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday 25 October at the Pantages Hotel Toronto Centre, 200 Victoria Street, Toronto. The programme will include a trade show and networking session during which the participating destinations and suppliers will have access to the leading travel agents.

Caribbean Week in Toronto is a dynamic explosion of Caribbean life and culture in the Canada’s largest city. It celebrates the Caribbean's vibrancy, diversity, energy and the other incomparable attributes - from its cuisine to its music to its people - wrapped up in one elegant package designed to tease the traveller to visit the region.
