In an interview with retired Superintendent of Prisons, Carl Harewood, now 91 years old, he recalled that prisoners were flogged with the cat o’nine tails under his watch. He would give the order for a prison officer to carry out the flogging. It drew blood on every strike across the person’s bare skin. The Cat of Nine had wire in it, all strapped up within its whip. All lashes are given across the back. The Doctor takes your pulse to make sure your health is good.
Harewood remembers a Rastafarian prisoner who was convicted for r**e and sentenced to 6 lashes with the Cat. Unsure of the pain the cat evoked, the Rastafarian said “Only 6 lashes? You can give me them now”.
Harewood recalled “When the first lash was given to the Rastafarian, he shouted “Jah!”. On the second lash, he shouted “Rastafari!”. On the third lash, he shouted “Lord have mercy!”.
The cat was outlawed in the early 1990s.
