“Rooted in Resilience, United in Strength: Trauma-Informed Practice and Crisis Preparedness for Juvenile Justice Practitioners” brought together frontline professionals from across the Caribbean for a training workshop hosted by the Caribbean Association of Probation and Parole (CAPP) in collaboration with the Barbados Probation Service.

Designed for practitioners working with justice-involved and at-risk youth, the workshop focused on three key areas: trauma-informed practice and resilience-building, su***de prevention, and disaster preparedness.

The Department of Emergency Management's Deputy Director, Major Robert Harewood, facilitated the disaster preparedness session for participants representing 15 CAPP member countries: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The session equipped participants to identify the unique vulnerabilities faced by justice-involved youth during disasters and introduced practical strategies, including Return to Happiness (RTH) psychosocial support techniques, trauma-informed approaches, and emergency management frameworks to help safeguard young people before, during, and after emergencies.

By strengthening the knowledge and capacity of practitioners across the region, the workshop reinforced the importance of placing youth resilience and preparedness at the heart of disaster risk management.

This afternoon students from Safe-Coast-Bim an initiative of the Ashley Lashley Foundation are touring the Department of Emergency Management. The are learning about disaster preparedness and response. Presentations and discussions are being lead by the interns of the Department supported by Major Robert Harewood and other members of staff.

📍 Community Resilience Regional Conference 2026 – Day 3

The tour took delegates to Speightstown, St. Peter and Holetown, St. James, where they explored ongoing flood mitigation initiatives and the Tsunami Ready Project.

Participants gained firsthand insight into how Barbados is investing in practical measures to reduce flood risk, strengthen early warning systems, and improve community preparedness for coastal hazards. These initiatives highlight the importance of collaboration in building safer, more resilient communities.

Through knowledge sharing and on-the-ground learning, the conference continues to showcase how resilience is strengthened when governments, communities and partners work together.

As part of Day 3 of the Community Resilience Regional Conference, delegates visited Springvale to observe the implementation of gabion systems—an important engineering solution designed to improve surface and subsurface drainage, reduce erosion, and help stabilize vulnerable slopes.

The field tour provided participants with a first-hand look at how practical infrastructure, combined with sound planning, can reduce disaster risk and strengthen community resilience. By connecting technical knowledge with real-world applications, delegates gained valuable insights into sustainable approaches to managing natural hazards across Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
