The Jhalokathi Diatrict (ঝালকাঠি জেলা) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh, which lies within the Barishal Division, the higher administrative unit. The capital of the district is the city of the same name, Jhalokathi. The total area of ​​the district is 707 km². The district consists of the 4 Upazilas Jhalakati Sadar, Kanthalia, Nalchiti and Rajapur. Jhalokati was formed in 1972

as a subdivision of Barishal District and was upgraded to a separate district on February 1, 1984. It is widely believed that the current area of ​​the district was once dense forest and later settled by fishermen. The area attracted Europeans from the 17th century due to the navigational opportunities. The British East India Company, the Dutch and the French established trading centers here, making the area an important transhipment point.
