Holy Cross Bangladesh Faith. Education. Service. Blessed Father Basil Moreau is the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Fr. The group arrived in Calcutta in May 1853.

The Congregation of Holy Cross was founded to help in the enormous task of re-educating people in the faith and rebuilding the Catholic community in the aftermath of the French Revolution of 1789. Moreau had organised a society of auxiliary priests to help out by preaching missions in poor and country parishes. He joined the two societies in 1837 to form the Congregation of Holy Cross. In 1838, he

gave a Rule of Life to a small group of laywomen, and on August 4, 1841, Fr. Moreau added a third society to the new Congregation when he gave the religious habit to the first Marianite Sister of Holy Cross. Moreau consecrated the auxiliary preists (known as Savatoriests) to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Brothers (Josephites) to St. Joseph and the Sisters (Marianites) to the heart of Mary pierced with sword of sorrows, as a “visible imitation of the Holy Cross Family” of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Moreau was the first to profess public vows in 1840 as a religious of Holy Cross. The frist group of Holy Cross missionaries to reach India left England January 17, 1853. It was composed of three Brothers, three sisters one priest and one seminarians. (Two priests were forced to drop out due to severe illness when the first attempt to sail in November 1852 failed due to storms.) Verite took the Sisters of Daccca, while the Brothers and seminarian went to Noakhali. Verite soon joined them as pastor of Noakhali, which included Agartola and Sylhet in its territory. Chillagong became the headquarters of Holy Cross in December 1853. The East Bengal mission was called at the time, “unquestionably the most destitute in East Asia and perhaps in any other part of the world.” Because it was such a difficult and dangerous place to live and work, no other religious congregation showed any interest in it. Though the mission was named East Bengal, the Church jurisdiction and the political territory or civil jurisdiction called East Bengal were quite different from each other. The Province of East Bangal was first created in 1905. The Church territory was officially called the Vicariate of East Bangal, set up in 1845 by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith at the Vatican. It first superior was Bishop Thomas Olliffe, an Irish Jesuit. The vicariate of E. Bengal embraced the present-day dioceses of Dhaka, Mymensing and Chittagong, a large part of Assam, the Arakan district of western Burma and the present Agartola Diocese in eastern India. It was a huge area, but when Holy Cross arrived in 1853, there were only three priests working there - a Portuguese Augustinian and two young Irish diocesan priests, both of whom were dead of disease by 1854. There were about 13,000 Catholics in the area. In Dacca, there was no church or chapel at all under the jurisdiction of Rome. In Bangladesh, a closeness of spirit has always remained between priests, Brothers and Sisters. They consider themselves as “the family of Holy cross” and celebrate community feasts together and strive to work cooperatively in parish action plans and other activities. In the Congregation as a whole, greater cooperation between priests, Brothers and Sisters is being promoted by the Council of the Congregation. It brings together annually the superiors of all the Holy Cross Provinces and Districts and the three Congregations of Holy cross Sisters. Our beloved founder, Blessed Father Anthony Moreau, founded the Congregation of Holy Cross, consisting of Sisters, Fathers and Brothers, after the model of the Holy Family. The members of the Holy Cross come from diverse family backgrounds, cultures, areas and regions to build community and communion. The basis for establishing community and communion is to become of one mind and one heart.

Blessings to Rev. Patrick M. Neary, C.S.C., who Pope Francis named bishop of the Diocese of St. Cloud earlier this morning. Bishop-elect Neary currently serves as the pastor of Holy Redeemer Church, a Holy Cross parish in Portland, Oregon.

"Fr. Pat is a highly respected and deeply faithful priest and pastor," adds Rev. William M. Lies, C.S.C., provincial superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross, U.S. Province of Priests and Brothers. "His leadership at our seminary at Notre Dame, as well as in our District of East Africa when he was superior, was exemplary. I could not be happier for Fr. Pat and the Diocese of St. Cloud, my home diocese. It is all a blessing! We will pray for Fr. Pat as he prepares to take on this important role as shepherd of the good people of the St. Cloud Diocese."

The new archbishop of Chittagong Archdiocese of Bangladesh has urged clergy, religious and laypeople to pray for him and cooperate as he plans to focus on fraternity, faith formation and development of the local Church.
“I have been called to serve God’s people through acts of sanctification, promotion of faith and guidance. I need your prayer and cooperation as I move on,” said Holy Cross Archbishop Lawrence Subrato Howlader CSC.
The prelate made the appeal following his installation as the new head of Chittagong Arch Diocese at Our Lady of Holy Rosary Cathedral in the southeastern port city of Chittagong on May 22.

“I pay tribute to the late Archbishop Moses M. Costa. May God grant him eternal rest in heaven,” he said.
A simple installation ceremony was held only with invited guests due to Covid-19 restrictions. About 123 Catholics including 32 priests, 23 nuns and religious and 64 laypeople attended the installation Mass and reception. The ceremony was broadcast live through the official page of Chittagong Archdiocese.
Among the guests were apostolic nuncio Archbishop George Kocherry, Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario and bishops from all seven dioceses of the country.
“Faithful of Chattogram should be proud of this gift of faith and at the same time be faithful to Jesus and his teachings.”
A grand installation ceremony, scheduled for April 9, was postponed when the government declared a nationwide lockdown from April 5 to curb a spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths.
Archbishop Howlader, 56, is the second archbishop and sixth bishop of Chittagong, one the oldest Catholic strongholds in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
He served at the first bishop of Barishal Diocese from 2015 after the new diocese was carved out from Chittagong. Earlier, he was auxiliary bishop of Chittagong from 2009 to 2015.
Archbishop Howlader fills the post left vacant when Holy Cross Archbishop Costa (2011-20) unexpectedly died from a stroke related to post-Covid complications on July 13 last year.
Archbishop Kocherry greeted the new archbishop and also announced his appointment as the apostolic administrator of Barishal Diocese unntil a new bishop is assigned.
“I encourage you to become a Good Shepherd to the sheep, a father and a leader to them and instill in them greater missionary zeal. I am confident that under your leadership Chattogram [Chittagong] will become an exemplary diocese filled with the spirit of evangelization,” he said.
The nuncio also reminded the faithful that Chittagong holds “a unique and privileged position” in the history of the Church in Bangladesh, where the Catholic faith arrived five centuries ago and spread to other parts of the country.
“Faithful of Chattogram should be proud of this gift of faith and at the same time be faithful to Jesus and his teachings,” he added.
Born on Sept. 11, 1965, in Nobogram of Barishal district, Archbishop Howlader was ordained a priest on Dec. 31, 1994. He served in parishes as well as a rector and novice masters in seminaries.
From 2000 to 2004, he studied at the Gregorian University in Rome and obtained a licentiate in depth psychology, spirituality and counseling.
“Chittagong played a significant role in the growth of Christianity in the country.”
Pope Benedict XVI appointed Father Howlader the first auxiliary bishop of Chittagong on May 7, 2009.
Chittagong played a significant role in the growth of Christianity in the country.
In 1517, Portuguese Christian traders landed at Chittagong port in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) when it was part of India. The second contingent that arrived in 1518 decided to settle down in Chittagong and nearby Diang, marking the advent of the first Christian settlements in the country. From 1518 to 1597, Chittagong was part of Goa Diocese of India.
In 1845, Chittagong became the seat of the first East Bengal Vicariate and the territory was entrusted to Dhaka Diocese in 1886. Chittagong Diocese was created in 1927 and covered territories of India and Myanmar. It was elevated to an archdiocese on Feb. 2, 2017.
Chittagong Archdiocese has about 30,000 Catholics, the majority of them indigenous people, in 11 parishes and five mission centers.
Bangladesh has about 400,000 Catholics in two archdioceses and six dioceses.
