Freshers’ Orientation | BME 2025 Batch

The Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET, warmly welcomed the BME ’25 Batch through the Freshers’ Orientation Program held on 23rd June 2026.
The event provided the new students with an introduction to the department, academic life, Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and the opportunities that await them throughout their undergraduate journey. The program was anchored by Chaity Chakraborty, Lecturer, Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET, who guided the event with her excellent coordination.
The freshers received valuable guidance and insights from the faculty members. Professor Dr. Muhammad Tarik Arafat shared a departmental overview and welcome message, followed by an informative session on Life at BME, Rules and Regulations by Dr. Jahid Ferdous, Associate Professor. Professor Dr. Taufiq Hasan, Head of the Department, shared his valuable guidance and words of encouragement with the freshers as they begin their journey at BME.
An insightful session on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and accreditation was conducted by Samiul Based Shuvo, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET, helping the students understand the importance of learning outcomes and continuous improvement.
A special highlight of the program was the interaction with alumni and senior students, who shared their experiences, advice, and memories, offering the freshers a glimpse into the vibrant BME community beyond the classroom. Ahana Jyoti Ahmed (BME ’19) shared her experiences as an alumna, while Md. Al Maruf Rataul (BME ’21) welcomed the freshers on behalf of the senior students. Representing the new batch, Sumaiya Ahmed Afra (BME ’25) greeted her peers and teachers while sharing her thoughts on this new journey.
We are delighted to welcome our newest members to the BME family and look forward to seeing them grow, learn, and make their mark in the years to come.

It’s a proud moment for Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET as two student teams from Level-3, Term-2 made remarkable achievements at the 16th Annual Rice360 Global Health Technologies Design Competition, held on April 24, 2026, in Houston, Texas.

Team AnkleGlide, with members Md. Al Maruf Ratul, Kazi Md. Borhanul Islam, Montaha Anowar, and Md. Aamer Intiser Shadman, secured 3rd place with an impactful low-cost device designed to help prevent blood clots and muscle weakness in bedridden patients. AnkleGlide is a low-cost, continuous ankle flexion device designed to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and muscle atrophy in long-term bedridden ICU patients. The device provides automated dorsiflexion and plantarflexion movements, making it suitable for resource-limited healthcare settings like Bangladesh. The team was supervised by Shams Nafisa Ali and Tasnia Binte Mamun.

At the same time, Team BioDrip, consisting of Rahin Ibne Hasan, Md. Abirul Alam, and Nanziba Islam, earned the People’s Choice Award for their smart IV therapy system that supports healthcare workers and improves patient safety. Designed to automate and optimize intravenous fluid management in line with national guidelines, the system incorporates real-time monitoring to reduce clinical workload and minimize risks of dosing errors and contamination. The team was supervised by Md. Tazuddin Ahmed.

These achievements highlight how thoughtful, low-cost innovations can address real healthcare challenges, especially in resource-limited settings like Bangladesh.

A big congratulations to both teams for representing BUET and Bangladesh on a global stage. This is just the beginning of many more achievements to come.

𝗕𝗠𝗘 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), BUET, successfully hosted the final demonstrations of our third-year capstone design projects.

Over the past year, our students worked on real-world med-tech challenges, applying structured innovation approaches with a clear focus on clinical and societal impact. The projects ranged from assistive devices to diagnostic and monitoring solutions, reflecting both technical depth and real-world implications.

We had active participation of industry partners and stakeholders. Their presence ensured meaningful evaluation, direct feedback, and valuable discussion on translation beyond the academic setting. Special thanks to Mohammad Solaimun Rasel, Iftekhar Hosen, Jakaria Jalal, S.M.Mohiuddin Milton, Fiaz Ahmed, Dr. A B M Toufique Hasan, Dr. Ret. Col. Syed Mahafuzur Rahman, and many others for attending the event and giving us valuable feedback.

Looking forward to further industry-academia collaboration for sustainable product development pathways from our design projects.
