We had great weather and fantastic visit by Hoadley & Blake and active duty soldiers stationed in Europe - in cooperation with AUSA General C.W. Abrams Chapter. Thanks so much for coming to Rolley Castle as part of Hoadley and Blake's exclusive Band of Brothers twelve day tour that starts on the beaches of Normandy and ends in beer halls of Munich, Germany. It's a different type of tour that looks out for unique boutique hotels and venues and limits the number of guests to insure a comfortable and unforgettable experience. We were proud to be part of it and to provide an insightful visit to Bastogne and the history of the Battle of the Bulge - as well as the medieval history of Europe (Rolley Castle is a 12th century fortress as well!).

It was a real honor to have Jack Moran WW2 veteran stop by Rolley at the end of Nuts Weekend #81 (Jack is sitting in the living room of Rolley Castle holding up a EE-8 field telephone). Jack, and his unit from the 87th Infantry Division, were cutoff for six days in the woods west of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. We asked if he ever used a field phone during the war - and his answer was "no - the phone was with the platoon sergeant" . See Jack's story at:

World War II veteran Jack Moran reconnecting with history at Château de Roly in Belgium.

Holding a WWII field telephone, once a lifeline on the battlefield, he’s not just looking at the past, he’s reliving it. These simple, rugged phones carried critical communication across the front lines, and for veterans like Jack, they still carry the memories of those moments.

Bringing history back to life through those who lived it.

A terrific recap of one soldiers story of the Christmas Day attack in the village of Champs next to Rolley. It is a 20 minute walk from Rolley Castleto this hillside position depicted in this story. Company "A" was on the front lines and reporting back to the 502nd Regiment HQ that was at the Castle. Telephone wire ran from near this foxhole to the regimental switchboard at Rolley.

December 30th, 1944 at the midpoint of the Battle of the Bulge. General Patton discussing next phase of the battle with General McAuliffe on the front steps of Rolley Castle (McAuliffe is the 101st General who replied Nuts to the German demand for surrender). Patton had just pinned on the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) medal on McAuliffe a few minutes prior and the DSC is clearly visible dangling on McAuliffe's jacket.

Patton and McAuliffe at Rolley Castle on December 30, 1944.
