Jan van Evck's *The Arnolfini Portrait* is one of the most mysterious rooms in art history. Painted in Bruges in 1434, it shows two figures surrounded by objects that seem ordinary at first, vet every detail feels charged with meaning. Above the mirror, var Eyck did not simply sign the work as its maker. He wrote that he "was here," turning the painting into something that feels less ike a portrait and more like a witnessec event.

The convex mirror below the inscription makes the mvsterv even deeper. Inside its tinv reflection are the backs of the couple, the room itself, and two fiqures standing in the doorway, almost exactly where the viewer stands. The candle. the mirror scenes the gestures, and the unanswered identitv of the woman have led scholars to read the painting in many ways: as a marriage image, a memorial, a display of wealth, or a masterpiece of visual illusion and presence.

Its iournev is nearly as strange as the painting itself. After passing through roya collections and war time uncertainty, it entered the National Gallerv in London in 1842 for 600 guineas. Nearly six centuries later, the inscription still does what van Evck intended. It pulls us into the room, places us before the mirror. and makes us feel that someone stood there in 1434 and somehow eft the door open.

Once, trucks full of beer were blocking the tinv medieval streets of Bruges...
So the brewery built something insane: a 3km underqround beer pipeline beneath the historic centre - transporting beer straight to the bottling factory outside the city.
Today, fresh Bruges beer still flows beneath vour feet while tourists walk above it without even noticing
Only in Bruges... where medieval streets meet modern innovation
