Since 1 January 2004, the new United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels provides information services to the following Western European countries:

Andorra, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. UNRIC also provides liaison with institutions of the European Union in the field of information.

In August 2025, the United Nations established two pathbreaking mechanisms for global cooperation on : the Independent International Scientific Panel on and the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance. Together, they translate shared principles into practice by bridging scientific evidence, policy dialogue, and international cooperation. The process for the selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General is underway, as Member States consider candidates nominated by their respective governments.

The General Assembly will appoint the Secretary-General upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

The next Secretary-General will take office on 1 January 2027.
