Sometimes a word has a broad meaning that does not map neatly onto one single word in a target language. Instead, depending on the context, alternative words are used to convey a similar meaning.

In today’s , we explore how translation looks like when one term can have multiple interpretations across languages. 🤔

A common hurdle when translating into is the English word ‘enforcement’. With no direct equivalent for this word in Portuguese, our language professionals use words like ‘execução’, ‘aplicação’, or ‘garantir a aplicação/execução’, depending on whether the intended meaning is implementation, application of rules or monitoring compliance. The Portuguese translation is therefore chosen according to context to reflect the specific nuance of the original.

As always in translation, understanding the context is key.

How would you approach this in your ? Let us know in the comments! 📝

Our Director-General Valter Mavrič, along with Marta Kąkol, Head of the Enlargement and Third-Country Languages Unit and Angelika Vaasa, Head of the Quality Coordination Unit, are attending the 30th International Scientific Conference “Society and Technology – 2026” in Zagreb.

This conference, organised by the Univerza Alma Mater Europaea, explores how technology, media, and AI are redefining economies and societies – shaping new paths for development in a rapidly changing world.

With ‘mobility’ as the conference’s connecting theme – understood not only as the movement of people, but also as social and technological development – they presented two thought-provoking upcoming papers:
- The first paper reflects on the role of human expertise and language professionals in the age of AI. 🤖
- The second paper demonstrates that multilingualism functions as a powerful geopolitical instrument beyond the EU’s borders. 🌍

It’s always enlightening to exchange views and discuss these topics with experts and academics from different fields. Thank you to everyone who participated in this meaningful dialogue. 💬

A big thank you to Maruša Mavsar for moderating the discussions and Univerza Alma Mater Europaea for hosting us!
