🌿 Bringing Nature Back to Belgrade’s Schools! 🌿https://nbseduworld.eu/news?c=search&uid=D85eAs3N

In 2024–2025, CEUS proudly launched the Contest for Greener Primary Schools, the first-ever co-creative initiative introducing nature-based solutions (NBS) into Belgrade’s primary schools. Through NBS EduWorld, pupils and teachers teamed up using fun, interactive tools like board games, role play, citizen science, and BioBlitz activities to design greener schoolyards and explore local biodiversity firsthand.

This Living Lab approach led to amazing outcomes, including:
🌸 A botanical garden at Miroslav Antić Primary School
🐝 An insect hotel built at Vojvoda Stepa Primary School
🌿 A school garden with greenhouse and composting unit at Veljko Dugošević Primary School
🌱 Nano raised-bed gardens at Starina Novak Primary School
🐞 Serbia’s first-ever BioBlitz at Đura Daničić Primary School

Even amid nationwide anti-corruption protests, these projects brought hope, community, and inspiration, proving how nature can boost well-being in tough times.

also partnered with the Horizon Europe project to host urban butterfly monitoring workshops, creating habitats that strengthen urban ecosystems and engage university students.

The Task Force for NBS Education is entering a new chapter📚With leadership now passing from NBS EduWORLD to ENaBLS, the Task Force will continue to bring together educators, researchers, and practitioners to advance nature-based learning.

Before the handover, NBS EduWORLD is sharing two major resources to strengthen the community’s work:

📘 NBS 101 for Journalists Design Guide
Helps NBS Hubs, scientists, practitioners, journalists, communicators, and NGOs co-create local language programmes to address the need for multi-disciplinary education and cross-sector in-person learning activities for public officials and the media. Based on the “humanize, localize, and solutionize” (HLS) methodology, the Guide explains how to:
• Establish two-way dialogue between NBS practitioners and journalists
• Select key local issues
• Develop a common vocabulary for NBS concepts in the local language
• Equip communicators to tell compelling stories that popularise NBS as a sustainable development strategy

📗 NBS Education Framework
Provides a structured approach for embedding NBS into formal and non-formal education, defining core principles, competencies, and teaching methods to prepare learners for real-world sustainability challenges.

With these tools in hand, and new leadership from ENaBLS, the Task Force is ready to keep transforming education for a sustainable and harmonious future.

What does it take to turn a school into a living lab for sustainability? 🌿At the NBS EduWORLD Summer School 2025, held in Greece and hosted by Ellinogermaniki Agogi, expert educators from across Europe spent a week exploring just that.🔍

From fieldwork in the Vravrona Wetland to hands-on sessions in place-based and inquiry-based learning, participants discovered how to integrate nature-based solutions (NBS) into real classrooms and whole-school strategies. They left with action plans to begin transforming their own schools into sustainability hubs starting this year.

The Summer School is part of the NBS EduWORLD Academy’s commitment to creating a growing community of educators ready to rethink STEM, empower students, and build greener futures through education.

Fatih Secondary School in Kahramankazan, Türkiye has just been awarded the NBS School Expertise label! 🌱This recognition highlights their exceptional work in embedding nature-based solutions into teaching, shaping students' values around sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental responsibility.

Head of School Tarık Sezer explains the meaning behind the award:

“This label is a prestigious international endorsement of our vision to nurture nature-centered, environmentally conscious generations.”

Through hands-on learning, community involvement, and a deep commitment to sustainability, Fatih Secondary School is turning nature into a classroom and into a source of empathy, growth, and innovation.

If the benefits of nature-based solutions in education are so clear… why aren’t they mainstream? 🌿
That’s the question explored in the latest , co-produced with NBS EduWORLD and featuring 29 diverse voices from teachers and researchers to city officials and community leaders across Europe and beyond.

This thought-provoking piece confronts the gap between knowledge and implementation, calling for both optimism and critical reflection as we move toward more sustainable, inclusive, and transformative approaches to learning.
