📢Europe's bio-based industries are ready to grow, so why is not the market keeping up? 🏭 🌱🥤 🧵 📦 🧪 🪸 🍔 🚗 💄 👗

Our new lead markets study shows the challenge isn't just production costs. Bio-based products bring real environmental, industrial and strategic benefits — but these aren't currently rewarded by the market.

Without a clear policy signal to create demand, producers lack the certainty they need to de-risk investment and scale up production.

Bioeconomy ! 🎉

wood can be made see-through and it is tougher than glass! 🪵 🪾

Scientists have figured out how to strip the color-giving compound (lignin) out of wood, leaving behind a honeycomb-like skeleton of tiny cells. Fill those cells with the right resin, and you get a material that's:

✅ About 3x stronger than plastic like Plexiglass
✅ About 10x tougher than glass
✅ A much better insulator than glass and great for energy-efficient buildings

It's already moving from the lab to the real world: our member Woodoo, a company in the bio-based industries community, is turning this science into recyclable, touch-sensitive wood displays used in car dashboards and billboards.

Even better, researchers are making the process greener, developing bio-based resins made from citrus peel extracts instead of petroleum.

Who knew a tree could become tomorrow's smartphone screen? 🌱📲

👏We are delighted to congratulate our member GuaTecs SAS, recognised for its innovative guayule latex: the first premium, local and natural latex being produced in Europe.

Guayule offers an exciting opportunity to develop a more sustainable and resilient European latex supply chain, including for medical glove production, and many other benefits.

🌍 For the planet: Guayule does not contribute to deforestation, can be grown on marginal land without competing with food production, supports biodiversity and can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions compared with synthetic rubber.

👥 For people: Producing latex locally can strengthen Europe’s supply chains and resilience, while creating new industrial and agricultural jobs.

💼 For the economy: Guayule can reduce Europe’s dependence on imported latex and rubber and has the potential to become cost-competitive with synthetic alternatives at industrial scale.

📢 Meet BIO ON, our new BIC Industry Member! 🌱 🌍️

What if agricultural waste could become the starting point for the materials of tomorrow? 🌽 🗑️ 👕 🚗 🔬

That’s part of BIO ON’s mission. The company develops sustainable, 100% biodegradable materials based on Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) obtained from agricultural waste materials and by-products.

Through continuous research and development, BIO ON transforms these resources into materials that can be used in a wide range of applications, from textiles and automotive to biomedical products.

Their ambition is to make sustainable alternatives accessible to everyone while developing materials that biodegrade naturally without releasing microplastics.

We are delighted to welcome BIO ON to the BIC community and look forward to highlighting their work and contribution to the bio-based industries!

🌍🏭 🌱 🌍 Did you know around 90% of Europe's chemical feedstocks are still fossil-based? Europe also remains heavily dependent on imports for synthetic fibers and cotton.

The good news: bio-based industries offer a real opportunity to change that. By scaling up bio-based alternatives across polymers, packaging, chemicals, and textiles, Europe can reinforce its domestic value chains, drive innovation, and build lasting industrial resilience, all while reducing dependence on imported fossil resources.

Our new lead markets study dives into where these opportunities are strongest and what it will take to unlock them ➡️ https://biconsortium.eu/knowledge-hub

🍂 Summer's over, and the BIC team is back with full energy!⚡

As we kick off this new season, our focus stays clear: helping Europe become the global leader in bioeconomy by 2050. 🌍

Bio-based industries are at the heart of this journey, turning renewable resources into innovative, sustainable products, and helping great ideas scale from lab to market.

A big thank you to our members, partners, and SMEs who make this possible every day.

🌊 Let's celebrate !

Freshwater ecosystems like lakes are vital reservoirs of biodiversity. Sustainable, circular approaches to resource use help protect them for the long term.

A great example is HICCUPS, an ongoing CBE JU project coordinated by our member Avantium, running until 2027. It captures CO₂ emissions from wastewater treatment plants and transforms them into biodegradable, bio-based plastics for packaging, think paper cups, takeaway boxes and food trays. 🍱 🍵

By turning emissions into useful materials, innovations like this help ease the pressure on our lakes, rivers and wetlands. 💧

🔙 Throwback to last year, when the EU Commission launched its new Bioeconomy Strategy. BIC responded with a clear position: to really help bio-based industries grow, the strategy needs to be S.M.A.R.T., specific, measurable, realistic and time-bound.

We called for practical support to help companies move from lab to factory, secure a sustainable supply of biomass, and compete on a level playing field in the global market. A year later, these ideas are still shaping the conversation around Europe's bioeconomy.

⛓️‍💥♨️ Reducing dependence on imported fossil resources is central to Europe's competitiveness and resilience.

Bio-based products can support this transition by making greater use of renewable biological resources produced in the EU, while helping diversify feedstocks across key industrial sectors. 🏭 🌱

Our new lead markets study shows how targeted policy measures can help turn this potential into long-term industrial resilience and strategic autonomy.

🔙 Throwback to 2025

📊 It was a big year for BIC as it grew to 375 Industry Members, helped connect bio-based start-ups with around 80 investors, and played an active role in shaping the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy.

Looking ahead, next few years will be decisive for turning strategy into real action for Europe's bioeconomy.
