Institute of European Democrats

Institute of European Democrats The IED, a political foundation recognised by the EU Parliament, promotes a wide range of activities: seminars, workshops, deep analysis and publications.

The Institute of European Democrats (IED) - ASBL, is a non-profit association based in Brussels and has been established in September 2007 as an independent Research Institute. The Institute of European Democrats is an innovative European political and cultural Research Institute that offers fresh political ideas as well as a strong and respected cultural background to the European Democratic Part

y (EDP) to which it is formally affiliated. As the political foundation formally affiliated to the European Democratic Party (EDP), the Institute of European Democrats is formally recognised and directly funded by the European Parliament through annual grants. Like all political foundations at the European level formally recognised by the European Parliament, the IED was established with the support of the European institutions in order to be a political think tank. The Institute of European Democrats promotes a wide range of activities that include studies and analysis, workshops and public conferences. To put it into a nutshell, as political think tank the IED supports the EDP with two pillars: it organises events, seminars and conferences and it works constantly as a research centre.

Discover our new project launched along the PDE / EDP - European Democrats ... More than a magazine, a platform where YOU could take the floor!

🇪🇺 Today at the European Parliament in Brussels, the PDE / EDP - European Democrats and the Institute of European Democrats (IED) presented "Democrats Review", a new magazine dedicated to political ideas, rigorous analysis and democratic debate.

The project brings together political leaders, researchers, journalists, elected representatives, activists and civil society. It aims to complement the speed of political communication with the time needed to provide context, confront different perspectives and turn informed reflection into political action.

Alongside major international voices, Democrats Review will highlight experiences from cities, regions and local communities: good-government practices, political innovations and perspectives from elected representatives, party members, activists, researchers and civil society.

The magazine will therefore serve not only as a publication but also as a working method for the European democratic community, allowing ideas, experiences and democratic solidarity to circulate across national borders.

🇪🇺 Last Saturday, in the beautiful setting of Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, the IED General Assembly was held alongside an IED Capsule dedicated to one of the most pressing challenges of our time: Defence, Security and Technology in Europe.

The event was a remarkable success on many levels. In the heart of the magnificent Centre-Val de Loire region, participants representing more than 12 nationalities came together with local stakeholders for a day of meaningful exchanges and strategic discussions.

A high-level debate brought together:

🔹 Sabine Thillaye - Member of the IED board, Member of the French National Assembly for both Committee on Defense and Security & on European Affairs - a leading advocate for stronger European cooperation.

🔹 Enrico Borghi - Italian Senator and member of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic, actively engaged in European security and defence issues.

🔹 Christine Dugoin-Clément - researcher and expert in cyber strategy, resilience, influence operations and emerging security threats.

A key message emerged from the discussions: Europe faces an urgent need to better coordinate its defence capabilities and industrial production capacities across all 27 Member States. While the European Union collectively possesses greater economic resources than Russia, its efforts remain too fragmented across multiple systems and national approaches.

At the same time, security is no longer limited to military capabilities alone. European citizens must remain at the centre of the conversation. As cognitive warfare and information manipulation are already taking place on European soil, strengthening resilience, awareness and democratic cohesion is more important than ever.

Thank you to all speakers, participants and partners who contributed to the success of this inspiring edition of the IED Capsule.

"EU–USA: Power, Performance, and Perception Beyond the Myths" A closed-door discussion examining the transatlantic relationship through evidence rather than assumptions thanks to the expertise of PhD and specialists! Using comparative data on economic strength, innovation, security, and global influence, the conference challenged prevailing narratives and highlighted where perceptions diverge from measurable performance.
The aim? An honest, analytical look at how the EU and the United States compare today: what this means for cooperation in a changing global order, and how our elected representatives can use this knowledge to implement policies.

💪On Tuesday in Athens, an important discussion took place: IED was invited by the Initiative for European Progress to address the issue of violence against women and families. In Italy, legislation has been passed and the term “femicide” has been formally recognized and incorporated into various legal texts. In Greece, this has yet to happen. 🇬🇷🤝🇮🇹

💜 This event is one of many that must take place to open the debate and, with all European stakeholders and countries on board, ensure the protection of women, mothers, and children across our continent from violence.

🧡Last week, the Institute of European Democrats was in Bilbao for two days: our members had the occasion to participate in the Congress of the European Democrats and discuss the present of our Democratic Family.

👩‍🍳But for IED, it was especially the meeting of Saturday that was decisive for our near future: 2026 is coming! We are excited to show what the IED is cooking for you ;)
Stay tuned!

🇷🇸 Belgrade Security Conference 2025
IED President Enrico Borghi took part in the panel “Unarmed in the Unseen War: How to Counter Hybrid Threats in Europe?” at this year’s Belgrade Security Conference, held on November 17–19.
The discussion focused on the growing impact of hybrid warfare in Eastern and Southeastern Europe: from cyberattacks and disinformation to electoral interference and psychological operations that weaken democratic resilience.
President Borghi highlighted the rising risks of cognitive warfare and “surveillance capitalism,” stressing how these threats exploit Europe’s internal divisions and destabilize institutions. He also noted Italy’s renewed commitment to countering foreign interference, including the recent Italian Supreme Defense Council meeting where hybrid warfare was addressed at the highest level for the first time.
A crucial debate on safeguarding Europe’s security and democratic foundations! Thanks to the organizers for their invitation.
