📍Last week on Wednesday (2 Sept), 🇲🇹 Foreign and European Affairs Minister Chris Fearne called for the EU to respond to emerging challenges by strengthening its ability to act together, not by weakening the role of its Member States.

“Europe is strongest when it acts together. Our task is not to choose between unity and speed, but to organise ourselves so that unity is reached earlier and action follows faster.” – Minister Fearne.

Minister Fearne was speaking to his counterparts at an Informal European Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting in Wicklow, Ireland.

Ministers focused not only on notable geopolitical developments in Ukraine and the Middle East, but also on how to improve the effectiveness, impact and agility of the EU’s external action service .

🇺🇦 Regarding , Ministers underlined the EU’s will keep steady its support and efforts to increase pressure on to end its war of aggression.

🌍 On the situation in the , Ministers discussed recent developments, including the ongoing conflict in and the Gulf, as well as the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of .

⛑️ Another topic on the agenda was the humanitarian situation in , the deteriorating situation in the , and support for the two-state solution, including prospects for deeper engagement with the Palestinian Authority 🇵🇸

Minister Fearne stressed that Europe’s credibility depends on defending international law consistently. Minister Fearne also reiterated Malta’s support for European action restricting trade in goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements."

🇲🇹 By now, you may have met a few of our many Attachés stationed at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU, and who work to represent Malta at the EU level.

⚙️ Each one of them is a cog in a larger, more complex machine. So, who is responsible for making sure the machine is working as it should?

📌 Meet Joseph Spiteri, who is serving as our Chef de Cabinet at the Permanent Representation.

The Chef de Cabinet plays a central role in the running of Malta’s Permanent Representation.

🤝 While Attachés focus on developing EU policy on different topics and files together with counterparts from other EU countries, Joseph is responsible for coordinating the internal structure of our Permanent Representation.

It’s a big job – ranging from managing the Permanent Representative’s Cabinet, to ensuring that the whole Permanent Representation functions effectively and seamlessly.

🔭 The Chef de Cabinet also has a role in strategic foresight on policy.

Joseph is also responsible for developing and maintaining a diverse network of contacts and connections that allow our Permanent Representation to rapidly engage with external actors in a timely and effective manner.

🎯 In a nutshell, the Chef de Cabinet helps ensure that the Permanent Representation’s complex machinery works efficiently and with as little friction as possible – letting our Attaches focus on the important job of effectively representing Malta’s interests at the EU’s negotiating table.
