Q-O2 Q-O2 is a workspace for experimental music and sound art in Brussels. It offers artists residencies, organizes concerts and different projects.

Q-O2 is supported by The Flemish Government, VGC Brussels, and the European Union. Q-O2 is a structurally subsidized workspace for experimental contemporary music and sound art since 2006 and has its own space in the Brussels canal zone. The workspace developed out of the contemporary music ensemble Q-O2. In practice, Q-O2 operates at three levels: it offers working residencies to artists; carries

out projects in collaboration with national and international arts organizations; and holds performances and concerts in its own space. In musical terms Q-O2 explores mainly three lines of approach: acoustic and electronic improvisation and composed music as well as installations and sound art. Through its conceptual preoccupations Q-O2 finds easily points of access to other disciplines.

- "Itโ€™s a good festival when no one has any rolling papers left."
- "My mom asked if I could turn off the printer while I was listening to my recording of one of the sets."
- "What was I doing before this festival started?"
- "โ€˜Iโ€™d love to offer you a drink, but I lost all my money to the Oscillation bookie office.โ€
- "This was a great way to use up my company sick days."
- "Have we met before, or did I just see you in the crowd every day for the last 9 days?"

It's raining today, and I watch the cellophane streets,

We're halfway this trip ::: today, we're both at iMAL and at Hall M - URSquare, totally acoustic:

16:00 Guided tour + conversation #2 with Aernoudt Jacobs, Charlie Usher, and Sonia Saroya & Edouard Sufrin, moderated by Elena Biserna.

Evening concerts M โ€“ URSquare

20:00 Madison Greenstone: Wild acoustic phenomena created by indeterminacies within the clarinet's timbre. A practice drawing on a study of the polyphonic qualities of the clarinet, a traditionally monophonic instrument, and explores sonorities that sound outside of themselves, with highly spatial, sculptural, and disorienting qualities.

21:00 Alexis Degrenier: Using space constraint as an extension of his setup, Degrenier inhabits a bare acoustic space with tense threads between ephemeral appearances and spectral disappearances.

22:30 Gwendoline Robin: A performance inspired by high mountain listening, translated into elemental visual and sound installations exploring the balance between ephemeral and permanent, solidity and collapse.

My voice is quiet but my thoughts are loud,

[recording begins โ€” background hum, indistinct chatter layered over low ventilation noise]

โ€ฆhave you ever heard of this place? โ€“ No, apparently something to do with Expo 58 and [word dissolves into static] ... have you seen my lipstick somewhere?

[pause โ€” bird-like sounds passing overhead]

Whatโ€™s the name of the hair salon run by an experimental UK electronic duo from Manchester?
[pause]
Autech-hair.

[distant laughter - faint distorted radio transmission]

During that performance, I felt as though I were the composer of the concert myself; I was given an arsenal of sounds within which I could move freely and focus on whatever I wanted; the foreground, the background, the echoes or the immediate sounds, and I created, I was holding the conductor's baton.

[pause - wild unstable sounds roaring, someone who has the hiccups]

Get me another one of those amazing pastries please.

[recording cuts abruptly]

Today, we're teaming up with Africa is/in the Future for a film night around this yearโ€™ theme and its echoes with Afrofuturism. Guided by Marie Umuhoza, the audience will be offered philosophical context and tools to decipher the symbolics of Afrofuturism referred to in two movies:

20:00 Introduction by Marie Umuhoza
20:30 The Last Angel of History - John Akomfrah (1996): A sci-fi documentary about Africa, history and memory in which Robert Johnson sells his soul for a black secret: technology producing the history of black music. 200 years into the future another itinerant figure, the Data Thief, sells his soul for the knowledge of his future.
21:30 I FELT IT INSIDE OF (ME) - .be (2023): An inner and outer dialogue about how the night(life) and its cultures affect q***r identities.

Victory is sweet even deep in cheap seats,

Vica Pacheco & Loto Retina at Maison de la crรฉation Modelwijk on 26.04 for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership

A live duet for two large-scale hydraulic sound sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian whistling vessels creating a continuous, mirrored yet never identical dialogue. Developed in collaboration between Vica Pacheco and Loto Retina, the piece explores sound as a result of physical processes rather than fixed musical notation. Sound emerges acoustically from the interaction of water, air, pressure, gravity, and time.

Vica Pacheco is a Brussels-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans experimental music, ceramics, and 3D animation, exploring mythological crossbreeding and human and non-human interactions through immersive performances and installations. Loto Retinaโ€™s music combines micro-sample chaos, gloopy bass, and unpredictable percussion into organic and mechanical sounds that feel both digital and animistic, growling as much as it grooves.

Cybernetic audiovisual environments, percussive (dis)appearances, reel-to-reel cyborgism, turntablism eclecticism, ephemeral audiovisual balances, in-situ traces, interactive forest memories, sonic morphings/blurred identities, vibraphone nuances :::

25.04, MSHR @ Beursschouwburg: Electrical signals and human presence unfold into dense networks of causality that babble with life-like current; homemade instruments conjure spatial feedback systems of light and sound.

29.04, Alexis Degrenier @ Hall M โ€“ URSquare: Using space constraint as an extension of his setup, Degrenier inhabits a bare acoustic space with tense threads between ephemeral appearances and spectral disappearances.

Gwendoline Robin fully acoustic in Hall M โ€“ URSquare on 29.04 for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership

Gwendoline Robin talks about her performace for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership. She is a Belgian visual artist and performer based in Brussels, in her work, combining installation, performance, and video, she explores the fragility and power of elements through ephemeral actions.

Coexistences #1 is a performance inspired by moments of listening and observing in high mountain plateaus, hearing river waters, wind, landslides, marmot calls, and noticing changes of light and color on rocks and forest paths. Back in the studio, these experiences feed visual and sound installations made from elemental materials, exploring the balance between the ephemeral and the permanent, between solidity and collapse, a way to rediscover the pleasure of connecting with natural and constructed spaces.
