📌 In this , Alessandro De Cicco pinpoints the main changes in the security architecture of Japan, a pacifist nation which constitutionally renounces war. But as Japan’s recently-adopted testifies, the international community is facing challenges “defining an era”. This policy paper draws conclusions on the topical relevance of the EU-Japan partnership in the security field.

🔎 At the end of 2022, Japan updated its national security strategy and adopted two other significant documents, the national strategy and the defence build-up program.

📌 The new strategy outlines an ever-changing security environment, touching upon the threatening activities of , , and . To maintain a free, open and stable international order, the national security strategy calls for necessary reforms on the part of Japan, the most remarkable of which are the debut of counterstrike capabilities and the doubling of defence spending.

🔎 Given its renovated strategic posture, Tokyo is willing to deepen security cooperation with like-minded countries and organisations, including the EU. Similarly, the EU, in its Strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific (2021) and the Strategic Compass (2022), regards Japan as a strategic partner with whom to further engage.

🎙 To European decision-makers, the study recommends exploring the following areas for intensified security and defence cooperation between the EU and Japan:

- the Union’s common security and defence policy (CSDP)

- common maritime engagement in the Indo-Pacific

- cognitive domain

- in military affairs

- unmanned assets within joint development programmes

- defence exports

📌 On June 10, 2023, the European Parliament in ASEAN and the KAS Multinational Development Policy Dialogue - Brussels together with the Directorate-General for Parliamentary Democracy Partnerships organized a panel discussion at the European Parliament focusing on strengthened - relations.

📌 The panel was part of a series of sessions at the 2023 European Event and moderated by MDPD Program Manager Jonas Nitschke. The panel featured distinguished experts from the EU and the Indo-Pacific region, such as Jim Maher, Senior Policy Advisor at the European Parliament in ASEAN, who spoke about EU policy preferences for increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific, and Yuneswaran Ramaraj, member of the Malaysian parliament, who presented his views on Malaysian politics and youth. Finally, Freya Chow-Paul, senior executive at the - foundation, and Rey Uzhmar C. Padit, KAS program manager at the Asia regional office, explained how to bridge the gap between young people from Asia and Europe.

📄 We are delighted to announce that the white series detailing the conceptual and empirical work behind the idea of a Global Climate Alliance ( ) was launched by Shri Jayant Sinha along with from across the globe.

🔎 The launch kicked off with a keynote address from Mr. Sinha and was replete with insights from the youth on leading action for the future generations. Going into the , the are going to be most impacted by while also being the ones leading in the future.

📍 Mr. Sinha’s highlighted that most of the climate action has to take place in the Global South if emissions reductions are to materialise at a global scale and that, toward that end, the Global South imperatively needs to collaboratively work with the Global North to accelerate .

🔎 In an insightful fireside chat with youth climate leaders, Jessica Ndlovu, Caillum Hedderman, and Maxime van Hoeve, we caught a glimpse of the youth’s perspective on leading and driving climate action, individually, in their communities, and at a global level with . Their voices spanned across topics such as actions that they are taking in their lives for the ; solutions that have inspired them and which they believe can be scaled; and their experiences in leading, and mobilising communities and leaders to act on climate change.

📌 In this episode Widya Puspitasari (IG: ), PhD candidate in policy making and KAS EIZ Scholarship Awardee, interviews lsmael Paez Civico (TW: ), board member of the European Youth Forum, to discuss youth participation and youth representation in the EU -making.

🔎 A 2022 by the European Youth Forum found that only 6% of MEPs are under the age of 35, compared to a European wide average of approximately 20 %. Furthermore, the 2019 election report has shown that less than half of young citizens voted in the last European elections. While addressing the different challenges that young people face in actively contributing to the in Europe and abroad, the also focused on how to increase youth in the upcoming 2024 elections.

🔎 The short provides an overview and comparison of EU's financial to Afghanistan by examining EU's past and current funding instruments to Afghanistan pre- and post- Taliban takeover in August 2021.

📍 Afghanistan has been the recipient of substantial and aid from the (EU) since 2002, positioning Afghanistan as the primary beneficiary of EU funding assistance globally receiving over €4 billion in development aid.

🗓 In addition, EU has provided humanitarian aid to Afghanistan amounting to over €1.5 billion since 1994. In the absence of constitutionally elected government, the EU has adjusted its approach in the provision of aid to Afghanistan. Following the military offensive by the Taliban in 2021, the EU has suspended its development fund.

🔎 However, EU's total financial commitment to provide humanitarian assistance and services for the Afghan people has actually increased since the Taliban takeover.

📌 Today we present a very distinguished guest, Nino Kalandutzo from Georgia, who works for a civic organization modeled on political foundations. As she points out, her foundation is but not positioned. Through civic education, the foundation seeks to build and somehow prepare the new generations to resist and deal with it on a daily basis.

📢 The main target audience are young people outside the big cities, who do not have access to informal , who are less exposed to the Western culture and speak little English or no other foreign languages besides Russian, and therefore very susceptible to disinformation and .

➡️ The discussion was an to talk about the actual political landscape in Georgia, particularly after the war in , and how this might influence developments in the region and in the . Everything that is happening now in Ukraine has the same underlying reasons why invaded Georgia in 2008. This is a historic turning point for Western countries and for Georgia in particular, which deserves to be followed closely.
