Every year on 1 May, people all over the world celebrate International Workers' Day, Labour Day.

Last November, we proclaimed the European Pillar of Social Rights, a very important step we took together towards a stronger EU.

We committed to in 3 main areas:
1⃣ Equal opportunities and access to the labour market
2⃣ Fair working conditions
3⃣ Social protection and inclusion

Now it is time to make sure these principles and rights become a reality on the ground.

Facebook fooled us all. It’s not good enough for Mark Zuckerberg to come before the American Senate. We want him to stand before the European Parliament and explain how exactly it is possible that a dodgy research institute like Cambridge Analytica could harvest personal data from 87 million Facebook users without their permission, and use it for even dodgier political purposes.

We are not looking for apologies from Zuckerberg; we need guarantees. Guarantees that everything will be done to protect users’ privacy and their online data.

Citizens’ interests should always come first. Always!

The violence we saw in the streets of Barcelona yesterday has no place in an open, democratic society ! We say it again: the referendum was illegal and anti-constitutional, but in no way could it ever justify the level of force used by the police against its own citizens. The solution can only be a political response, not a police one. The Catalan government took the citizens down an illegal path by persistently breaking the rule of law. Mariano Rajoy and his government also bear a huge responsibility in what happened. For months, the Spanish conservative government refused to open dialogue with Catalan authorities and completely disregarded the voice of many citizens in Catalonia. We call for a cooling down of the situation and for all to engage in an open political dialogue in the respect of the constitutional law and the rule of law.

This week, we want to bring the matter to the European Parliament by holding a plenary debate on the rule of law in Catalonia.
