⚠️The European Chemicals Agency has released the results of its investigation into aromatic brominated flame retardants (ABFRs).

The ECHA report states that the use of non-polymeric ABFR additives pollutes the environment due to their persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. These substances are released to the environment throughout the product lifecycle, with the waste stage being of particular concern.

HEAL's Programme Lead for Health and Chemicals, Sandra Jen told Euronews, “HEAL calls on the European Commission to swiftly follow up on ECHA’s findings by advancing restrictions on ABFRs and ensuring a toxic-free environment that safeguards public health.”

💔 Nothing lasts forever—but toxic chemicals do.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are man-made chemicals that never break down. They infiltrate our bodies, contaminate our water, and harm the environment. These chemicals are linked to life-threatening health issues, including cancer, liver damage, and hormonal disruption.

Stronger measures are needed to phase out PFAS and protect both our health and the environment.

This is not just about reducing risks—it’s about ensuring that future generations can thrive in a safer, cleaner world. 🌍

🇪🇺 We’re calling on EU leaders to act now. It’s time to implement policies that prioritise our health and the environment.

We are among a number of organisations who have written to the new Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen to offer our help and expertise in shaping policies to support a transition to fair, healthy, and sustainable food and farming systems.

This year’s historic consensus following the on the Future of Agriculture is a major turning point and a golden opportunity for the fresh EU mandate to correct the serious flaws in today's . With a breakthrough report where stakeholders agreed that “business-as-usual is not an option”, Commissioner Hansen has a mandate to deliver the ambitious transformations that Europe’s citizens so urgently need.

📢 Take Action Against "Forever Chemicals"! 🌍💧 PFAS, or "forever chemicals," are persistent, toxic substances that threaten our environment and health. The EU’s proposed restriction plan is a vital step toward a safer future.

This proposal includes:
✅ Sensible transitions for essential applications like certain medical uses and energy technologies.
🌱 Promotion of safe alternatives for a PFAS-free future.

Civil society demands strong support from the EU Commission to make this change happen. Let’s pave the way for sustainable transformation in the chemical sector – together!

HEAL has cosigned a letter to President von der Leyen, insisting on the EU Commission's support for the PFAS restriction proposal at EU level.
